Shortening Swords?

Postby Kael McBrian » Fri May 04, 2012 10:24 pm

Alright, this is probably a dumb question, so I'll just get it out right quick.

I've got a nice, lightly used Edhellen sword, but I think I got one that's a bit too long for me.

Every part of the sword is probably better than I could build on my own, so I'm asking what you fine folks think I should do to shave off three or four inches of length with minimal damage to the sword.

If the handle is long enough, just hack off the pommel, core and all, and make a new one.

I wouldn't advocate this... Just get/make a new one to your liking. Sinesay when you're wanting a longer weapon, you'll thank me.

I've had to do this a few times. Normally what I would do is scrape off the pommel, trim the sword foam up from the bottom of the blade until it's where I want it to be, cut the core, and then rebuild the pommel. Take care when you're trimming down the blade foam that you don't accidentally score the core with your knife. You could possible introduce a point where the core could fail.

depending on how long you have been fighting, i would recomend new gear. at some point you will want a longer sword, at some point you will need one, wpo for instance. so the best thing to do is to get a shorter one, this way you wont be in a position that you cant get back to what you stated at.

i carry regualrly 3 lengths of swords, and make 5 lengths. they start at 32" cores, and go up and down by 3" the longest i have ever made, for single handed use is a 42", works for wpo and nothin else.
