Does anyone know how to make a good syth using fiber glass instead of pipe?

LOL a Syth?

Is that kind of like a Sith? You don't make a Sith. You find someone in their youth with a gargantuan level of midi-chlorians and train them to embrace the dark side of the force. Of course you have to be disciplined in it as either a Sith or Dark Jedi yourself first.

I made one that works pretty good. I used a fiberglass mop handle, appox 5 foot long. Basic idea was this:

Started with a U shaped piece of plank foam (scrap from a heater shield I cut down).
Applied DAP to the core, then used a long * driver to wedge a hole into the plank that was about 18" give or take.
Slid one side of the "u" shaped plank down over the core.
Placed a thin piece of scrap leather on the inside of the "u" about 4" down the shaft and 4" up what will be the striking edge.
torque wrapped the plank to the core and all along the "u" to include the leather strip and along the striking edge (stay with me, it will be safe)
Now that you have built the structural portion of the weapon, you apply either a thin layer of DAP along the striking edge or use spray 77.
Cut a piece of yoga mat or other foam you use for your stab tips. It should be around 1- 1.5" wide and long enough to start cover all striking areas. This is your striking edge.
Cover the weapon how you see fit, I used tights from walmart, but it is posisble to sew a cover if your not lazy like me for a gimmick weapon.

Why do I have a feeling this will end up hurting someone in the near future? Build some swords. They're simple and will serve you well. I guarantee a scythe will be a woefully inadequate weapon on any field. Ignoring its actual effectiveness, the forces applied to the weapon are always applied in such a way that they will tear the weapon apart very quickly.

A side note for Randy: It looks like you need some haft padding on that monstrosity.

haft padding is for the weak!

The leather strips actually prevent the foam from tearing. The only real use for this type of weapon is to have fun on the field. The biggest factor for me was worrying about tripping someone, I generally stayed above the waist and attack the shoulder/hip area so that I didn't risk it.

Also, the point/tip of the weapon is generally the only place where I was able to get a strong enough hit for bel standards. The "slashing" edges just weren't able to do enough percussive damage.

If I ever intend to actually field the scythe, I promise to pad the haft appropriately. This was more to see if it would actually work than anything else.

Beautiful. Never expected to see a Scythe that looked like it actually worked. Now, to be effective with it might be a different matter.

It worked fairly well, course I had Rev blocking for me and Kyrian raping the field with arrows. Then I felt ashamed and put it down. The over the shoulder sorta wrap was pretty effective.

Why... just what do you plan on doing with a weapon that has the striking surfuce of a spear, thats swung one way and and is at the end of an extention? The only viable reason to have it is for line battles that youre proctected by a team with and that you can come down just past the lip of their shield to catch a shoulder, all while making sure that it doesnt come down at an off angle. "Oh use it as a red!" one real red swing from it and its going to crumple or twist. And if you miss with the tip, you haft the **** out of someone as a red. "WAIT!! maybe put a spear tip on it!" well now you have a weapon that you poke people with but has a 2 to 3 foot "shield hook" getting in the way. Not to mention, as a herald, if I saw someone push it past someones feet and then pull back, pulling the persons feet from under them, Id fail the **** out of immediately for safety reasons. Most of us can attest, when you trip while back peddleing, that its pretty hard to not get hurt landing on your back, *, and head, and even harder to avoid when you have a shield strapped to your arm. Same principle. This is just an overall bad weapon on so many levels. Please can we just put it under entangling/tripping and be done with it?

I think it comes up for two reasons: 1- a noob who doesn't understand the game mechanice or BoW very well yet and is eager to participate and add to the sport or 2- a foamsmith who has it tucked away in the idea box of maybe I'll come across a material that will make this build viable as a 'just because I can' piece. We know that to look like a scythe and behave like one is not going to work well on the field and would be a horrible safety concern. Building one that's stable to show off and occasionally spar around with would be a hell of a lot of fun though.

This. Specifically Kyrian was looking at some scrap foam I had laying around and said "you know that looks kinda like a scythe" After closing one eye and squinting with the other I saw what he saw and went to work.

Again, this is not a serious weapon. It isn't intended to win a tournament or assist my unit/realm in winning any real combat scenario. BUT, its alot of fun to bring on the field and swing around abit. Same reason I made a quarter staff and a norman bearded axe. They aren't nearly as effective as a regular pole, but they are fun to play with and they add a little flare to the game.
