Shield foam rigidity

Postby NessiePop » Wed Apr 03, 2013 3:43 am

I'm ordering polyethylene shield foam, and was curious about how rigid the 2" is. I know Edhellen uses 3" foam on their coreless punches, but is the 2" rigid enough for, say, a 2' by 3' punch? I'm ordering from foamforyou.com, FWIW.

I have some 2# foam that is 2.25" thick. It certainly has a bit more give than the 3#, so I ended up adding a layer of 4# and a layer of 2# to give mine more rigidity.

Of course, I don't have the stuff from foamforyou.com. The stuff I have I got from some random fighter in trade for some garb. I can't even guarantee that it's 2#; it could be lighter. Either way, I imagine a 2# foam like that would behave similarly to an all blue-foam punch shield (which is typically 2.5" thick); they bend a fair bit -- nowhere near as rigid.
