T-Shirt sleeve covers (pic)

Postby Santiago » Thu May 30, 2013 6:04 pm

I'm using sleeves from long-sleeved T-Shirts for loaner weapon covers. Anyone else do this?

This is a sleeve from an old Aerosmith concert tee. Enjoy.

I would say that it's legit, so long as the logos you leave on aren't blatantly modern (e.g., if you had the left "Aerosmith" on the cover, that would likely fail the cover). When you run out of T-shirts to cut up for covers, I would recommend moving on broadcloth or a bottomweight cloth. Broadcloth runs ~$5/yd, but you can sometimes get it on sale for ~$2.50 from Jo Ann's Fabrics, and bottomweights range from $8-$12, but you can often find them for 30-50% off.

Barring that, if funds are tight, get a $3 sheet from Goodwill and have at it. A nice, high thread count sheet can get you a lot of covers.

Yes, once I get past my first few builds, the good stuff will come into play for sure. This and the couple others I made with t-shirt material will probably never go anywhere but to the local park for practice :)

Another quick and cheap method are leggings. Walmart sells packs for .50 for the cheap ones. Snap 3 on a sword and you have a cover for a few months. They are also good for emergency covers if you're at an event and your seems pop.

Even if it has a modern print I'd still pass it... It's a * sword... So long as its safe and passes for hit I'd let a spongebob sword cover fly!

As a warning, there is a rule against modern print. Some checkers would fail your weapons because of that.

Hate to be a stickler... But that pertains to garb... Not sword covers... Unless you wanna make a stretch that a sword cover is garb for your sword

That is true, but I watched a head checker fail a weapon on that standing. Just giving the guy a heads up. I think that, in most cases, it's just as easy to grab non-blatantly-modern fabric for covers. There is nothing against modern covers in the rules, but I think that other rules already set a tone against it and, in fitting with a "medieval/fantasy" setting, Spongebob really wouldn't fit.

Obviously, in the case of arrows (a common situation of modern fabric), using different fabrics and modern prints helps with identification in a pile. There are other ways of marking larger weapons.

true, a head weapons checker can be a jerk and fail a weapon cause they don't like it... but is that a person who is a good weapons checker or is it just a person trying to be a butthole...

Weapon covers aren't covered extensively in the BoW, but don't be that jerk that ruins peoples' experience or photos by going out of your way to bring modern characters/themes onto the field. In the course of personalizing our equipment, covers tend to get creative and decorative, but there's a certain point where it's just facetious.

I often use a pair of thick solid colored tights from the dollar store. You get a cover out of each leg and so far I have only had one rip on me in about 6 or so months of using this method.

I keep a pair of those in the my repair kit that I take with me to practices and events. If a cover tears, etc. they are super convenient; just slip it on and go.
