Starting Foam Carving

Postby Archive » Wed Jul 10, 2013 7:25 am

If I was to get into Foam carving for use with plastidip. what would be recommended for equipment? Belt/disc sander? Dremmel? would the foam clog the equipment? I've carved out sculptures before but that was in the wood shop on my college campus. I want to save up and buy my own equipment to create custom flail heads, pommels, hilts, etc. Suggestions? Tutorials?

Check out Fitz's tutorials on PDing. He shows some of his technique/tools there. As well, check out Plastidip Artists on Facebook. There are some great resources there in the "files" section, and a lot of knowledgeable peoples that can answer your questions more specifically, and more expediently.

For what I've done, I've used a pen-style wood burner to do some engraving, and I've used my dremel as well, especially for smoothing edges and the like. Razors are, of course, a must, and I've seen people used scrolling saws as well for cutting out larger sections of foam.

That's all I've got, though.

Good luck!

A drywall rasp comes in handy for rough shapes.

There's nto much to add unto Fitz tutorials. I personally have used a soder gun with an exacto blade attachment for small details.

The only issue I can think of with what you're wanting to work on is Flail heads. Since striking surfaces can only be covered by cloth.Beacuse of that I have seen an increase in flail hafts being plastidipped.
