Best way to stop a stabbing tip from rolling?

Postby Matthias - Dun Abhon » Sun Jul 14, 2013 7:55 pm

I made a club the other day, and the stabbing tip on it rolls a bit when giving a medium or harder stab. I'm not really sure how to fix this problem, since I've never had it before.

The club is kitespar (probably 0.524") with two spiral-wrapped blue layers (each capped) and one final full wrap (also capped). The stabbing tip is two layers of yoga mat. It's got two wraps (not tight) of hockey tape around it to keep it from shearing off from tip shots.

If it's too intensive of a repair, then I'll probably just remove the stabby and use it as blue-only, but I'm planning on removing the pommel and re-weighting it soon anyway, so I figured I'd see if I could fix the rolling problem at the same time.

It sounds like there are too many caps on it before stab tip. Totaling 5 layers which are attached to spiral wrapped blue foam seems like a weak base to add a stab tip to. Unless your cuts on the foam were neater than a surgeons, that's where I would suspect the problem is. The total tip size is too tall for the base supporting it. No really good way to fix it, you can patch it by adding another wrap around the blade and stab tip, but it will be temporary.

That's kinda what I was starting to think. What if I cut the tip down some (the yoga mat layers are attached with carpet tape anyway)? How many of the 3 blue layers should I remove to regain enough solidity? Or is that just a bad idea?

What I did with my last bat like that was do 1 wrap and cap of all blue, and then the next layer was a wrap of blue and a cap of yoga mat, and then the final layer was a wrap of blue and cap of yoga mat. So that gave 3 wraps of blue foam, 1 cap of blue foam, and then your two caps of yoga, with one of those caps being enclosed in a wrap of blue foam. It ended up a bit on the firm side, but the guy I made it for never complained back to me about the stab tip rolling, so I think it worked out.

I cut off two layers of blue foam, and it now stabs beautifully. Thanks for the tip, and sorry it took me so long to post back here!

Thurat, isn't that essentially replacing the 2nd and 3rd cap with a yoga mat to make it stabbing?

One technique that was shown to me was to slightly compress the yoga mat foam before taping it. I applied downward pressure with the palm of my hand onto the stabbing tip and then taped it down while it was compressed. It wasn't enough to compromise the stabbing tip and make it hit significantly harder but it was enough to stabilize the stabbing tip and reduce how much it folded.
