Has anyone done this before?

Postby TicklePits » Mon Aug 25, 2014 11:43 pm

I was making a new punch shield and about to cut some fiberglass for the handle when the thought occured to me: has anyone used kite spar for shield handles? I searched and could not find anyone even asking about it. Is the concern that it could break too easily?

I haven't heard of anyone doing it, but that doesn't mean that it hasn't been done. I don't think breakage would be a huge concern, but it could happen. With how expensive kitespar is compared to fiberglass, what would be your main reason for not using fiberglass?

It's not that much more expensive. Also, it's gloriously light.

A 60" stick of 1/2" round solid FG is ~$5. The same length of weapon quality Kitespar (.524, say) is ~$15 (sourcing from Goodwinds).

I just used some left over kitespar that was not going to be used for anything anyway (too short and I don't currently have any need for short swords). Maybe this is less of a problem for big strong people, but I'm pretty weak so having a light shield is great. I get really tired lugging around a heavy or even moderately heavy shield, so this should help with my endurance.
