Clawsword

Postby WarlordOfMaltise » Wed Oct 15, 2014 3:39 pm

So
While I am not too new to LARP or foam smithing, there's a question I have about creating a specific weapon (and yes, I've read the thread titled "Please Read Before Posting")
This weapon is a one and a half hand sword and involves roughly 4 feet of pipe and two joints (45 and 90 degrees) that form into a short claw. It has the potential of stabbing and slashing (single edged) once I work out the specifics.
But the real question I have is: how would one go about using and reinforcing joints in a blue foam weapon? What materials do I need?
This isn't going to be created for some time but I would like some input from ones that know more than I.

I'm having some trouble visualizing the weapon you're describing, or where the joints would be located. Could you do a basic sketch, or link to a reference?

To not even go after the ridiculous nature of the weapon:

PVC joints are notoriously hard to pad and protect. In our game, because of the high contact levels, they're going to break down too quickly and fall apart.

Image was stubborn, URL may not work. It's an idea i came up with, derived from the Chinese hooksword. It isn't the final product, the claw itself is about half current size.

I understand the PVC joints part, which is why I'm asking, to find out if there's a way of interior reinforcement, or a different way to make the joint.
Also, ridiculous nature?

The link for the image doesn't work.

Most fantasy inspired or novelty weapons do not actually work in Bel. Even if they can be constructed effectively, their use in combat is often very, very limited. Though a hook sword is good in theory, its use for hooking shields or other weapons is likely no more effective than an axe's. With the added joints, it would likely break. Given the nature of PVC, there really isn't a good way to reinforce those types of joints to make them strong enough to withstand that kind of use.

Every foamsmith will give the same advice: build the basics first, and once you have a solid understanding of current foam tech, start exploring from there. I won't ever tell someone not to build something, cause the game is about doing what's fun for you, but you have to be prepared to waste materials in trying
