Core Support and Repair

Postby WarlordOfMaltise » Sun Oct 26, 2014 4:14 pm

Well, friends
I seem to have made a rookie mistake and used a core that is much too weak for the sword I have crafted, resulting in a snap less than an hour into practice. It's ~5' long with a 1/2" Schedule 40 PVC pipe.
Is there a material I can buy to put through the core (at a semi-low price)to support the greatsword? Or is this a doomed project?

That's a doomed project, as you put it. 1/2" SCH40 can be used to make swords about 34" long, total length, but after that they tend to flex out or, as you've experienced, snap completely. You could probably cut the weapon down, add a new pommel, and have a blue sword out of it, but I would not recommend adding supports to hollow cores in any build. You are always better off getting a better core. If you must use PVC for a red weapon (not advised), then use 3/4" SCH80. You can get a min-red out of it, but I can't speak to its longevity.
