Interesting Buckler Shape

Postby timff8 » Fri May 01, 2015 8:18 pm

Hello All,

I saw an buckler design I've not heard discussed.

I was recently reading A Red Fighting Compendium Part 1 off of the Brotherhood of Red facebook group and I saw an interesting design for a buckler. It was built based off of what appeared to be your standard 12" circle, but with arms protruding forward with a curved interior between them. Picture the Millennium Falcon but with a curved surface between the arms (I have no idea if that's the proper term in that instance).

It was worn on the forearm of a man wielding a red with the arms pointing towards the wrist, and I'm wondering if this isn't a great idea to copy. Theoretically a 6" diameter semicircular gap area between the arms allows for greater wrist movement without necessitating a mechanism to keep the buckler static so much, and allows more shield area with which to block versus a standard round buckler.

Short answer is to use what works for you. Different folks use different bucklers because they accommodate their particular fighting style.

Oh I'm aware that experience with a shield is going to matter more that than the design itself; I'm just curious if anyone else has seen/done this before. It's a cool idea I just don't want to invest in it if someone knows a serious problem or limitation with it.

If you saw this online, could you share the picture or document that it's in?

It's in the Red Fighter's Compendium on the Brotherhood of Red facebook group; it's in a pdf file. The link is below but I don't know if you can view it without being a member.
