I need a decent tutorial on how to make simple Rocks for new players. I found maybe one or two, but they didn't go much into detail.

Can i fill a sock with open cell foam, make it into a ball, and sew it shut?

ALSO am i allowed to put Velcro on the back of my shield to hold rocks?

A sock should be fine. You can also use a pool noodle as a core for rocks, or roll some foam up until it is 4" in diameter.

Your Velcro shield. I doubt it would pass at events for concern of it cutting you or other players. Sew up a sack and stuff your rocks in there and keep it on your belt.

I meant to say like a small strip of velcro, not the entire back.

I don't see an issue with a velcro strip from a safety standpoint, but you may run into issues of having your rocks fly around when you block or if you do any kind of aggressive shield work.

I've seen people attach a bag to the inside of their shields and fill that with rocks. Didn't get a great look at how they did it though.

The Velcro could work, but I agree that you'd probably just end up losing rocks. Sew a pouch into your shield cover and stuff it with rocks; works great. I've seen people use a strip of elastic to hold their rock pouches closed to prevent them from spilling out.

Stuffing a sock with open-cell would work. Just, you know, use dress socks or something that doesn't look like utter crap.

Quilt batting and other similar "fluffy" stuffing materials also work. Chopping scrap foam into small bits and lightly packing it into a small bag (>4" in diameter) also works, just be careful not to pack tightly as the air space around the foam is what makes it not hit like a brick.

Edit: The BoW says that a rock must be at least 4" in diameter. However, it never says that it has to be more than that in more than one direction. The rule is vague, and I've seen disc-like rocks that were greater than 4" in diameter and I've seen your typical ball type rock. The rule needs clarification, but some people play it as 4" in all directions from the center of mass (excluding decorating dangley bits). So, flat rocks might not pass everywhere. Just a heads up.

The last person I saw using a large number of rocks simply tucked them in behind the shield cover.
