Bow draw weight.

Postby Elyk » Fri Jan 06, 2006 12:30 am

I have a bow right now that I am comfortable with, and would like to use for Belegarth. Just one problem, the draw weight is about 60# or so. Is there any way that I can get that down within leagal range, or do I need a whole new bow?

no, there is no way you can get a 60# bow low enough for our use.

Try a longer bowstring. An archery shop should be able to tell you if they can string it to 35#.

60 down to 35# would be quite a leap. If it's even possible to get a string long enough to bring it down that much (which I doubt) it'll be so off from how the bow is supposed to be that it'll slap like hell and also probably hurt the bow.

And in case you're wondering, 60# (or close to it) would not be close to safe with our arrows.

As an avid archer since 1982, I do know a bit about these things, when I started, they didn't have a bow light enough for me to draw, and we had to lower the poundage on it. You can easily and safely get a bow's draw weight changed about 5-7 pounds up or down by twisting a string, if you have 25 pounds to work on, a longer string will work, however, that will bring the string too close to the face of the bow (the side facing you is the face, the side away from you is the back) you will begin by stripping vanes/fletching/feathers off of your arrows, and you will also see damage being done to the face of the bow, reducing it's structural integrity to the point of failure, sure, it may take a long time, but it will happen, and I don't want to be the one shooting it when it does fail, I have had bows explode on me at full draw in tournaments while shooting 90 meters. it sucks.

On a side note, you can find bows that are perfectly fine, both in quality and draw weight for very reasonable prices (35 and up for new, who know the costs for them on EBay)

Point taken. That's why I recommended asking an archery shop if they could reduce the weight. I agree 25# is an extreme change.

Yup, thought so. Thanx for the help all!

Yea, 60# is just outside the rules, right? :D

We'll see at Opener  . It failed the first day of Octoberfest but passed the second, so it's pretty borderline one way or the other. I still need to get a bow scale. It's still the heaviest pull of any of our bows, but that's a pretty rough measure. Also, I often forget to untwist the string beforehand.

I've left it strung overnight a couple times to try to help stretch out the string... .
