Gypsy culture and the military...?

Basically I have one drawn out question.

I am trying to base my character of a fairly poor Gypsy. Yet I can find very few garb ideas online. All the resources I have are sort of for generic tunics and generic pants and such. Does anyone have a few pointers on how to have fairly individual garb while having very little money and very little talent in sewing (but someone who is willing to work hard?)

My other question, is about Gypsy culture. I have found a decent amount of resources about Gypsy culture but very few about Gypsy culture and any sort of military activity. Perhaps a scholar on here might be able to supplement my missing information...?
