Tabulatures of medeval songs

Postby Banger » Mon Oct 05, 2009 8:52 pm

Hi, im new to belegarth and Im much more interested in drinking and hanging out getting **** faced with good people than kicking lots of * on the field.

I am a musician and i like to rock the minstrel/Bard role and play music on the sidelines, does anyone know where i can get tabulatures of medeval songs for any intruments or am I going to have to resort to keep puting a gothic spin on things like the trooper by iron maiden?
Let me tell you about a porcupines balls, theyre small, and they dont give a ****!!!

I have looked online for medieval stuff in tab or sheet music and had a very hard time finding anything. Good luck to you.

Try lurking on some SCA boards, or talk to members of the SCA. A lot of them play "authentic" medieval tunes.

I have a copy of the book "One Hundred English Folksongs" edited by Cecil J. Sharp. It's not exactly what you want, but it's decent. It has words notes for voice, piano music for each song (which could be adapted), and notes about each song. It includes many of the same titles that Steeleye Span would sing, if you are familiar with them, but it is not 60s folk-pop as they are.

If you'll be at Octfest (and let me know before thursday) I can bring it and show you.

Oooh... Mirka supplied me with a good one: Watkins Ale! There's not tabulature, but there's sheet music.

If you're interested in authentic instruments, the lute is notated entirely in tabs. It's apparently supposed to be pretty darn hard though.
There are a few youtube vid posters who play lute for rec. you could probably pm them. This guy is good about responding to positive comments.
