Pants Help Please

Postby Sieglatan » Thu Oct 22, 2009 11:41 pm

Usually, I am pretty good with medieval terminology, and the general gist of how garb works, etc.
However, here I am completely lost. i don't even know what this style of legging is called (in before "those are shorts, **** lolzorz!"). You always see them in depictions of Spanish Conquistadors, and other block prints of the period, but I have no idea how to make them in the way that they puff out and have depth. I want to make at least some top leggings in this style to compliment a thirty years' war look, but I don't even know what kind of materials to look for.

I'd imagine that the outer stripes would have to be heavier than the inner ones, so the entire thing doesn't just curl up...
Thank you!

In some areas they are called upper hosen, or trunk hosen, round hosen, or pumpkin hosen (depending on how big you want them.) They are also called breeches in some cultures, but be specific about your time period when goggle-fu-ing, otherwise you will find things that don't match.

The hero Belegarth deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A Viking *.

This pattern looks to be fairly simple, and while it has the shape you want, it isn't cut in like the picture you posted. I'd suggest this If you are looking to make simple pants. I've made a pair of trunk hosen before, And it is VERY complicated and time consuming, also I can't imagine fighting in a pair, since they don't leave much room for movement, but if its what you want to make and you think you can succeed more power to you!

This is an "ok" tutorial on how to make the shorts you were looking for, I'd recommend a heavy cotton broadcloth with a spandex bend of below 10% ( a 90% cotton 10% spandex is best), as I mentioned before I find these pants to be very binding. Sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice accuracy for functionality.

But in the end fabric choice, color and the final design is up to you

Good Luck!

Ah! Thank you both very much!
I was thinking of including a crotch seam for added mobility, and making the
pants longer, and more narrow (not quite pumpkin-like), so thet fit directly into my fighting boots/greaves.
These links are perfect for my beginner needs- Thanks again!
If I have any other questions, I'll edit this post-

They are, it's that whole upper hosen/breeches time. It all varied by where you ended the leg, if it was loose or tight to the leg, and how padded. Though Landsknecht pants always remind me of knickers. :P
