Fur on Garb

Postby Dyre » Mon Nov 23, 2009 6:36 pm

I was going to put some fake fur onto some of my fighting garb, but other people in my realm suggested that I not, since fur can easily be ripped off. I have a tabard that has a fur trim, but it will be my festival garb, not fighting garb, since I don't want it to be ripped. I was wondering if anyone has tried putting fur onto their fighting garb and if it managed to stay on long enough to matter. I would like to be able to have garb that has fur on it, but I don't want to try sewing on fur just to have it ripped off at the first practice.

To clarify where I would put the fur, since that would change how it would be effected during fighting, I would at first put it on pants, not on the knees, but on the bottoms of the pants. Does anyone think this might work?

I also want to know if there are other kinds of fabric that mimic fur or if even real fur is better for putting on garb. I haven't been fighting Belegarth for very long, only a few months, so any kind of advice would be really helpful.

If its festival garb and not fighting garb, you can put it anywhere...
If you are fighting in it, avoid the legs entirely, put it on the torso.

It's not anymore prone to ripping than any other kind of fabric. Go nuts.

Lots of people have fur incorporated into their garb (real and/or faux). I've owned several different garments with fake fur as a trim or accent - never had a problem with it tearing. If anything, it's more resilient than the cloth it's attached it.

One of my tunics has a heavy fur trim.
Never had any trouble with it during combat, except for the odd grapple, but since it is mostly accent it's quite easy to replace if it's ripped.

Just watch where you put the fur, it's quite warm.

I also have fur on my fighting jacket. It's not any more warm than anything else your going to wear really, and my jacket takes ALOT of abuse, and i do mean a lot. Never had a problem with fur coming off. I have actually had the leather under it tear and leave the fur intact. Its old leather, but still. Its pretty durable stuff. Must be why animals wear it.

I can't remember his name for the life of me but one of the knights in (i think its the) EBF wears fox/weasels over his spaulders. Its the coolest fur on fighting garb ive ever seen. Also Ghazi Dawnstrider has a female fur coat that he wears for fighting during the winter if i remember correctly he was going to put studs in the coat.

Thank you all for that advice, I think I will try it on a torso piece before trying it on the legs.

When you get access to a sewing machine, just zigzag the edge of the fur to the body of the tunic so that nobody can get their fingers underneath the fur trim to rip it off. When I made yours, I only attached the trim to the body by a single seam, because I'm awesome like that.

just remember to decrease the thread tension a little bit, and if necessary, gently pull the fabric through the arm so the needle doesn't lock up.

The person Gesh is referring to is Locutus, and yes he's EBF.
