the best fabric paint?

Postby jester kaiu » Tue Dec 01, 2009 5:08 pm

Ive tried some of those fabric pens and they just dont retain the color. Is there any fabric paint that the pros use that has turned out to last? The people at Michaels and JoAnnes are of no use.

I have my shield done in Acrylics that I initially water down (to soak in the fibers) and then subsequent coats were thicker. I think I painted this cover in 2007 and it looks the same today. It's also much easier to find in bulk and cheaper than "fabric" paint.

Slightly watered down acrylic is the way to go.

Though if you want to be REALLY spiffy, you should applique your emblem on ;)

I've found the consistency of milk (more coats but easier to spread) or cream (less coats, but harder to spread), works really well.

I use a parrafin based textile paint, that is really really durable, and, best of all, shows up opaque on dark fabrics~!

I tried painting my Roman Scutum with regular acrylic paints and a medium to make it a "fabric paint", per the advice of folks at Michael's.

Here is a link to a process similar to what I used.

Within 30 days, my previously durable shield cover was wearing through and tearing right in the middle, rendering it useless. I highly suggest you don't add the acrylic polymer to your paint.

I use regular acrylics, I don't water them down. I generally only takes two coats. The first doesn't cover all the way but makes a good base for the second coat. Make sure you let the first coat dry all the way and the second will cover great. Almost everything i have done has been white on black cloth. I have shield covers and garb pieces that have lasted about 6 years now with only minor cracking, etc.
