Safety equipment may be worn without it having to look medieval. However, I do suggest you do your best to try and hide any equipment like this that you can. Someone put a set of lacrosse goggles on a helm, looks great, and provides the protection needed.

I personally think regular sunglasses are not safety equipment, but that's just a matter of my personal opinion (we survived 100's of years without them, including most of every one of our childhoods playing out in the sun). They are allowed as well on every field I have been to.

As far as making it look less glaringly "modern" goes, the best example that I have seen of it here on the boards comes from Magnus of the Red Hand.

Dags against them, or from what I've seen really pushing. Bel they're fine.

I know that Rosey has a neat pair of goggles that don't look "modern" to me. I'm going to attempt to make, out of patched leather, a pair of goggles that block the sun. Think Warhammer goblyns or dwarves.
