Women's Garb

Postby Artemis » Tue May 04, 2010 4:58 pm

so i already have a beautiful blouse, skirt and bodice that i made when i was planning on going to a renaissance faire, but i realized that the clothes are not right for fighting in. i was trying to find some women's garb that i could make but it seems a bit scarce.

i found this set of instructions http://dagorhir.com/gear/content/garb/apron_dress.php
but i was wondering if i have any options besides that. Are there any durable good looking other things? dresses or pants/skirts/shirts?

That dress looks a bit restrictive to fight in, IMO. All you really need is a basic skirt or pair of loose, baggy pants and a simple tunic. Tabard over a sports bra would also work, I've seen that plenty of times. :P

But really, fighting garb doesn't need to be fancy. In fact, it shouldn't be, 'cuz it's more than likely that you're going to get it dirty. Especially if it rains and the field turns to mud. I don't know where any patterns are online, but I'm sure if you search for more basic stuff you'll have a better chance than looking for period dresses.

That's why you make all your stuff look cool so you'll always have some more.

Also, original poster may want to reconsider their fighting name. There are already multiple artemis' in the game.

Women's fighting garb is essentially slightly more fitted men's fighting garb. Make a nice tunic (I like this pattern: http://www.dagorhir.com/gear/content/ga ... _tunic.php + http://www.forest.gen.nz/Medieval/artic ... ksten.html ) and a pair of drawstring pants and you've got really good basic garb. Embellish your tunic or wear another tunic over it and you've got fancy garb. Add tabards, belt flags, cool belts, pouches, skirts, etc. as you like.

EDIT: Links added; thanks, Ilariia.

If you're going down that route, though, don't forget the bustiers and thigh-high boots! Distraction garb FTW.

From a practical standpoint, just get garb in a traditional men's cut that's sized to fit you properly. Historical women's clothing isn't designed for fighting, and historical fighting clothing usually isn't designed for women.

Seriously, though, go for what you think is fun.

Yeah, seriously, tabbards and tunics are pretty much tabbards and tunics.
Unless you have gigantic boobs, and I mean big, your're probly fine.
The tunic patterns for fatties can fit anyone.
All I've ever done is sew up the sides of tabbards to fit and cut off the excess to make every tunic Ive ever had. My garb sucks though.
Unless you want to be fasionable, which is very cool, you should be fine just going for it.
If you want to be fasionable, start looking at and collecting pictures of the types of costumes you want. Then stare at them unit you cansee the inidvidual garments that make up the costume. This sometimes task a while. I wore out the pause button on a vcr once. Then get those individual peices in the stringest form you can. Stay away from costume store crap for the most part. Either make or buy from good people all the cool bits and peices that make up the garb you want.
Don't forget the accesories. Accesories are what make a good costume in any environment.

I just did a major spring cleaning of my closet. I threw out so much shiitake that i dont ue (no worries, it's all going to my local charity shop)

The stuff i have left are things that i feel relly good wearing. Mostly very classical, subtle, well-tailored things that just makes sense to and on me. I wanna move towards a more grown up, less crazy colors/high street fashion/hipppie-punk things. I just feel like moving on style-wise.

I am convinced that someone periodically sneaks into FB's home, pops the keys off his keyboard, and rearranges them. It's the only explanation.
Ignore me, I'm probably wrong. Unless of course I'm right, then you're welcome.
