Clergy Garb

Postby Sir Par » Tue Jan 25, 2011 12:37 pm

Does anyone know of a good place to either buy or get patterns for medieval clergy garb. Most specifically the Pope or a Cardinal or Bishop. And I'll also be needing a miter.

Costume shop in Garden city. I don't know how much Papal Raiment has changed since medieval times honestly.

The pope is the closest historical equivalent to Belegarth president. Elected by the College of Cardinals (WC) has some authority in every realm, but usually can't overide the monarch (realm leaders). I'm just getting ready in case I win the election. That way I'll have specific garb for my presidential duties :D

There are a couple of patterns in that book I was gonna bring to let you take a look at next time we meet up. I'm 99.9% positive there is a miter pattern in it as well.

Sacrilege aside, its an interesting and funny idea, but otherwise a poor choice, IMO. Though many Successors of Peter used the Office to dabble in and interfere with the political goings on of the time, the Bel Presidency holds neither the powers of Ex Cathedra statements nor unilateral Excommunication to enforce "His Holiness' " policies, be they Divinely inspired or otherwise.

I submit for your consideration other candidates to emulate, who are both secular and whose offices are a closer, though imperfect, match to the responsibilities of the Bel Presidency, they are:

Par, one of the major pattern companies (Simplicity, etc, etc) has a priestly robe pattern (the standard long black coat/robe). The pattern is back on the mainland, but I'll edit this post when I know which company it is specifically.
Hawaii: Manoa
Washington: Gondor

There are no staffs in Belegarth. Because of how they are constructed, they are really Pugil Sticks.

Think of going to your local cathedral and asking the rector if you can take a gander at the Bishop's vestments? Say you're doing it for practice at making clothes and costumes and would like to see the real deal so you can be respectful. Sure, you won't be getting patterns, but you'll be able to look at and take pictures of the real thing. Granted the pope has some unique things for his office, but he is still a bishop. Hell, you might even get a cool little history tour of the cathedral and see some of the hidden rooms and whatnot.

You also may be able to purchase similar items or at least get a good look at them from a Catholic supply store. I think this is going to be one of those areas where just making a reasonable facsimile is going to be more than enough. Do it a little better than a Halloween costume and you should be gold.

Many of these have good descriptions and pictures, but no patterns.
Papal vestments

Undergarments
  • Alb - like a cassock
  • Falda - a long skirt which extends beneath the hem of the alb

Footwear

Robes
  • Chasuble - outermost liturgical vestment
  • Simar - like a cassock but with a shoulder covering / mini cape

Overcoats / Capes
  • Fanon - doubled shoulder cape
  • Greca - double breasted overcoat worn over cassock
  • Mantum - a giant cloak
  • Mozzetta - elbow length cape
  • Pallium - a woolen cloak worn over his chasuble

Belts / sashes

Accoutrements

Headgear
