Garb & armor movie/TV show inspiration

Postby Kyrian » Thu Feb 17, 2011 9:22 am

Here's a running list of diifferent TV shows and movies that might be inspiration for weapons, armor, garb, etc. I've deliberately avoided anime, computer games, and video games since much of what's in them is often almost impossible to replicate in real life. I am in no way commenting on how good the movies are or how historically accurate they are, just if they can serve as good visual references. Feel free to add to the list. I tried to break down the movies and shows into different categories but I'm not really sure how well that worked.

I would also like to throw in:

Centurion (2010)
Valhalla Rising (2009)
The Wild Hunt (2009)

All three have great examples of garb. Also, all are movies.

Asian?

Ong Bak Series (Specifically II)

Fantasy

Outlander (2009)
Probably the best and only FUNCTIONAL sci-fi/fantasy crossover ever.

Pathfinder (2007)
Not accurate, but some beastly quasi-viking armor.

10,000 BC (2008)

Prince of Persia (2010)

Hellboy II (2008)
A lot of fantasy-inspired races/cultures; the plot being a merging of the fantasy world with the real world... Elves, goblins, etc.

Granted it hasn't aired yet, but they did do a behind the scenes bit with the lead costume designer. Once it aires The Game of Thrones HBO series will be an awesome place to look at several different styles of clothing.

You do bring up a good point. The little sequences between the weapon testing are pretty good.

That said, "Warriors" with Terry Schappert is another good source. I love that series. The guy has the utmost respect for all the cultures he learns about. Top 3 episodes (IMO) being, in order: Viking, Samurai, and Hawaiian. He works with live historians and martial artists most of the time.

Even though the artist has gone to great pains to model the clothing accurately, I'm reluctant to add this to the list since it doesn't have actual (vs. CGI, drawn, or animated) actors.

It's not a movie or a TV show, but if you wanna scope some legit and pretty accurate viking garb you should check out the comic book Northlanders by Brian Wood it's really awesome.

If you're looking for movie inspiration, this site is completely dedicated to historical and fantasy movies for costuming:

It can be a little unwieldy to navigate, but there are a lot of good pictures of garb to get you thinking.

This thread is a great idea.
I wouldn't be so quick to exclude anime and what not, ie: Samurai 7, Samurai champloo, Claymore, D. gray man, Shaman king, Naruto, Ral Grad, and zombie powder can crank out some nice looking stuff, and I'm shure there is more.
Games aren't bad either. Square enix make games that have a lot of potential garb wise. ie: any final fantasy game, kingdom hearts ect.
Shinobi is a good movie to watch for asian garb ideas.
I'll do some lookin cuz this thread needs to have pages upon pages of referance.

Topic Title: Garb & armor movie/TV show inspiration

Kyrian wrote:I've deliberately avoided anime, computer games, and video games since much of what's in them is often almost impossible to replicate in real life.

Perhaps those who wish to contribute other sources could start another topic with buster swords, 7-8' katanas, floating crystal swords, scythes, 10 foot capes, dresses made entirely of belts, armor without joints or any viable way to put on/take off, a lot of spiky pastel-colored hair – etc...

That was mostly a joke… mostly. He said movies though; do note… a lot of the movies listed above do have some fantasy elements. They’re just not as outlandish as some of the things seen in videogames. While I will say there are some historically accurate or viable fantasy sources in games. That’s not the topic.

Haha I agree. Only in the situations that people take stuff out, directly copy it and go all cosplay on us.

As far as insperation goes, I think anything can come out looking good and feasably medieval/fantasy.

Honestly though I had a hard time putting Naruto down just because of this. I actualy can't stand the show. It's annoying, but anything that could help someone come up with some good looking garb design shouldn't be left out because of the type of media it streams from.
I think this thread deserves the absence of peoples pettiness.

Which Alice in Wonderland are you referring to Purp? There are several different production of it out there and if I can remember correctly some are much more appropriate to use as the kind of inspiration one might use for our kind of garb than others?

Bleach No, just no.
Gundam Extremely modern/Sci-fi
Dr. who Too modern imo
Death note From what I've seen, Modern
Full metal alchemist- Ok, maybe for desert garb, but mostly...no. Too modern
Dragonball series Again, modern inspiration
Pokemon Modern
Digimon Modern
Rorouni Kenshin- Author did much research into proper garb of the timeframe. While it took place in a gunpowder era, much of the clothing is standard Japanese garb that dates back centuries.

Note my comments in the quote, all bolded. I'm confused as to why you would note mostly modern, and in some cases, even far future as garb inspiration. Most of those I can't think of a single thing that could be inspiration for garb.

On topic:

TV:
Stargate: A lot of the alien cultures used clothing that would fit in for garb, from both SG-1 and Atlantis

Movies:
Stargate (see above)
Dungeons and Dragons 2
Willow

Arrakis might not be the god of threads, but explicitly in the first post it was stated:

I've deliberately avoided anime, computer games, and video games

And then, not only do you deliberately continue to post anime, but you suggest series which are modern (Death Note) or so vague it's useless (how many "Gundam" series are there?).

Your're obviously doing it on purpose, given your last post:

Just because Kyrian says he avoided it doesn't mean if you have something thats usable thats an anime or a video game, to not post it.

Look at all the total war games, most of the stuff in dynasty warrior, etc..

Whoah whoah whoah. I am not in any way trying to troll this thread. I will say this again. I think this thread is great, we need to have it. I'm just not going to ignore anything that could provide even the slightest bit inspiration.
if you look at my previous posts only one didn't have anything to add to the list. That is because I don't want to say anything without contributing at least a little bit.

Say what you want, but if you actualy think about it, everything I have put up could be inspiration for something that could be usefull. If you can't see that, oh well. Why do you have to say I'm dumb on the thread and turd it up, send me a message instead.

Even if something is modern doesn't mean it can't be transferd to our game. Look at the awsome stuff Cheese has done. He has a unit, a sub unit, and they all have their symbol on there garb and represent well.

Deathnote could crank out some good looking garb, like the demon esque characters. I think it would be cool if someone made a collar like Ryuks. Also I actualy thought of making gundam/samurai themed armor.

My last post was typed like that because it was coming from a psp. So yes it's not typed well but I'm still just trying to push the thread forward, not point fingers and say shun.

Kyrian avoided anime and what not because of the people who discredit it just based on that fact. I honestly can't blame him. He doesn't have to deal with a bunch of people that like they way the word "no" runs off of their tongue so they find any reason they can to get it out.

I'm going to go make a thread in gen mayhem just for all you guys that need to get it out of your system. But try to contribute to the sport and take the * off of this thread, and take it there.

I am so frustrated by what you just said Rasheab, I don't know what to say, and I have the angry body shakes. Congrats. I hope I meet you in person at Chaos this year so I can hold your hand like a five year old and tell you why I think everything I have posted could have decent inspirational value.

Ahh, I appologize then. Your earlier posts were in easily readable lists, were capitalized, etc. The last post was just a stream of words, so I thought you were trying to.... (insert whatever word here) the earlier posters who disagreed with you. My bad; I appologize.

Edit: I'll leave this up for a day or two, then I'll be deleting my posts (so my grumpies don't pull the thread down).

Inspiration can truly come in any form, be it computer games, anime, ren faires, or something as abstract as a pattern on a screen saver. I really should have been much more specific when I started the thread. I was looking for TV shows and movies where someone had to physically craft the garb, the armor, the accessories, etc. Hence the reason I was avoiding animation and CGI. If that was interpreted as being dismissive of those sources, then I apologize. I realize now that I really should have been more inclusive. I will be adding a section for animated movies/TV shows and updating the list later. Besides, I'll get to add two of my favorites: Record of Lodoss Wars and How to Train a Dragon. :)

Purp, just to clarify, I do not disagree that anime CAN provide inspiration, I just noted that most of the ones you noted were openly modern or science fiction. Yes, I admit that the Zeon or Earth Federation emblems could potentially transfer to bel units...much to Bandai's potential hate...but that doesn't mean you can base garb on the clothing used in Gundam. Also, as I've made Zaku-themed armor, making armor to look like a Mobile suit is more difficult than just making an original design. They lack human proportions, making it hard to transfer it to a human body for armor.

Moving on, I did agree with you for Rurouni Kenshin, as it uses historical clothing. For armor inspiration, though, Ronin Warriors would be a better choice than Gundam. I do agree with your later movie picks though.

I cannot believe nobody's brought this one up- Kentaro Miura's Berserk!

Easily some of the most realistically designed armor of any visual series I've ever seen, along with beautiful garb ideas from the late Middle ages. The conceptual art from the art-book is a goldmine of conceptualization.

Ok, because that bot will get deleted, Pillars of the Earth actually DOES look like it would be a good inspiration. I'm...confused...

Looking back through the thread, it used AoC's suggestion for it. Turns out it wasn't so clever after all.

Okay, watching everyone just stop dead in their tracks and stare at the non-sentient robot that just contributed to the conversation was hilarious.

And it probably doesn't matter, but if we're going to use classifications, then I'd like to point out that

King Arthur/Merlin etc
Pirates of the Caribbean
Conan the Barbarian
A Knight's Tale
10,000 B.C.
Prince of Persia
Highlander (TV & movie)
Van Helsing
Passion of the Christ

are all just as much historical as Robin Hood, or Tristan and Isolde.

And
Pirates of the Caribbean & Passion of the Christ are mentioned twice.

also Passion of the Christ should really be under Classical... since it has Romans in it and all.

Also should Van Helsing count? It's Victorian Era isn't it? FFCs Dracula would be better, considering the opening sequence is more our period.

Lastly, One Night With the King has some good Persian stuff. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0430431/
