Would fishnet work as a garb material?

I'm curious about something...would black fishnet be acceptable as a part of garb? My idea is just incorporating bits of it, not like a fishnet body suit *cringe*. My idea would be utilizing a cropped, sleeve-less fishnet shirt (only covering down to right below the bust) on top of another sleeve-less top. It's a little hard to explain, but hopefully my messy sketch below will help.

Should be fine so long as it isn't overly baggy. That's the only way that I would see it causing problems with being an entanglement risk.

haha...it'd be far from baggy LOL. It's very fitted actually :3 And if someone gets entangled in it...they are doing so rather odd fighting...or something else entirely :p

My main tabard is made from a quasi netted material and we've recently picked up some similar fabric for similar use. I've yet to have anyone say anything about it as far as can't use that or danger problems, and my **** is baggy as hell. Even in grapple fights I don't think I've ever had problems with it.

Uruk-Hai used to have fishnet tabards. I think it was actually fish netting, but it didn't cause any problems.

It's not really period, but , I don't think anyone will fault you on it, especially if it's mostly covered and part of the greater outfit. But if all you got is a stretchy emo/goth fishnet shirt and that's it....go put on some garb :)

I guess my main question would be why bother with the fishnet in the first place? Does it fit your persona? You think it looks cool? Feel more comfortable with something covering you a bit more?

I'm leaning toward the monster races, so it may fit, a little at least. I also was going for a little coverage, but very breathable coverage ( we are currently practicing in 95-97 degree heat down here!). I have other garb, I just like fishnet and happened to already have it LOL. Who knows what I'll finally end up wearing. I've got a good bit of garb already anyhow (I've been doing ren fest for over a decade) and I'm just playing around with outfit ideas :3 Only downside of my current garb hoard is that much of what I have is black. Trying to avoid heatstroke XD

I fight every week in black garb down here in D-town, and we just slipped back out of the triple digits. We haven't had any problems with heat, as long as I keep yelling at folks to drink water. Hydration is easily the most important step in avoiding heat-related trauma.

Actually it was military grade netting from army surplus stores. :-) I still have my netting in a tub somewhere...

Yea...they discontinued it. Its super hard to find these days.

In any case, i have been known to add bits of actual fish net to my monster garb. I have an armored skirt that has bits and pieces of it.

Its not bad as garb...and a vaguely fishy smell keeps people away, so bonus!

What, fishing with a net isn't period?

Edit: Oh, "fishnet."
Meh, apparently plenty of ninjas wear it, and ninjas are period.*

Oh my mistake, that totally makes it garb. How could I have been so silly.

I will note the fantasy element of the game and that, in many fantasy settings, netting/mesh is a common element of clothing.

Haters hating, etc.

If this is garb:

Then this gets a serious amount of lee-weigh:

You're implying that a slippery slope exists, Mel. There isn't one. She's not talking about wearing fishnet thigh highs. She's talking about incorporating it into other garb. And the jersey won't get any more leeway than it already has.

The same thing was said about Under Armor shirts once upon a time. People get lazy, forget their tabard/tunic to cover it up, it gets "too hot", etc. Give it enough time and somehow Shortsleeve under armor shirts become accepted as okay garb as long as you're wearing decent pair of pants. Knowing belegarth culture/members, how long do you think it would take for fishnet shirts to hit the field?

Just to clarify though, the "actual" fishnets that a lot of monster type people like to use is fine in my opinion. It's the skin tight, stretchy costume stuff that this "hate" is directed at. I'm not saying there's no place for it, I'm just saying it's not on the belegarth field. ;)

Once again, going to point out we've done fishnetting before, it was fine.

Secondly, I'm going to side with Cal on this one. We can argue "slippery slope" till we turn blue, but it's the same as it's always been. Something is either garb, or it's not, & "garb" has always, & for all intents and purposes will always be defines as "if you look like you're trying, it's garb."

Make it look good, it'll pass for garb.
