Corduroy pants

Postby Xavier » Mon Jun 27, 2011 4:18 pm

I have a baggier pair of Corduroy pants that I'm thinking of using as garb pants (perhaps as feasting garb since they look a bit nicer)

Just wondering if Corduroy is a period material/can be used. It looks OK by BOW rules. More so curious to how period they are.

It'll be hot, and you'll lose your stealth bonus by swishing when you walk, but otherwise seems all right.

Corduroy is a weave, not a fiber/material, similar to velvet. Corduroy is usually made out of wool or cotton.

Unlike velvet, however, there isn't much proof of it's existence pre-Revolutionary war. (IF someone can refute that, PLEASE do!).

I don't think anyone is going to give you too much **** provided they aren't obviously modern corduroy pants.

Hell, I think I have a few pairs of pants made out of an upholstery corduroy.

Wear a long tunic over them so you can't see the pockets and don't expect to win any awards for good garb.

I might modify them so they don't look so modern. Either way I was just curious

Sounds better than jeans, maybe worse than sweat pants. Belegarth seems to operate under the rules that you can dress up anything and make it work. That being said, you have to put in a lot of work to turn a pair of obviously modern pants into respectable feast gear.

I know that there is not much evidence of corduroy pre-fur trade/ pre-Revolutionary war at least in North America, they is some evidence of it in Europe, but not a whole lot. It is something that is used a great deal in Civil War/Revolutionary War reenactments for civilians, and for Fur Trade reenactments for voyageurs. Which is out of the suggested time frame I have been informed we are looking at.

That being said, I wear my fur trade reenactment garb for belegarth all the time, not as feast garb, but as general garb because it looks good, and wears well. I wouldn't suggest corduroy for fighting, the way it is weaved makes it pron to knee and crotch blow-outs, but as feast pants, as long as your tunic covers the pockets as Arrakis said before, you should be alright.

Wouldn't making a pair of pants out of some decent looking material be a lot easier than trying to make a pair of corduroy pants look period?

Xavier, I will make you pants if it means that you won't be wearing corduroy pants on the field. If you will, imagine the chafe. Antoinette's points on blowouts hold true, too.

I would never ever try to fight in them! I guess I should have been more specific. I meant as feasting garb. Thanks for the offer Cal but we have a garb making session this weekend.
