Corroded Copper-Plated Goblets

Postby Akroth » Fri Jun 29, 2012 10:24 pm

I recently acquired some nice looking goblets from a thrift shop. The exterior is made of some shiny silver metal, possibly tin. The interior of the goblets is plated in a light-colored orange-ish shiny metal. I would guess that it's probably copper, bronze or brass. There's some fairly severe corrosion at the base of the interior one of the goblets where the underlying metal shows through. The other goblet has very very light corrosion (Two tiny black specks)

As I'm not sure what the underlying metal is, and I doubt that corroded metal is good for me, is there any way of re-coating the interior of the goblet(s) in something non-toxic? I'm not overly concerned about appearance. Mostly just making the goblets safe to use.

EDIT: Sorry for the massive images. If there's any way in BBCode to reduce image size, or hide it in a spoiler type thing, please let me know.

I can see them, but its hard to see what your talking about Akroth, I would just bring them to Dralle or Graven and see if they can help you.

You might be able to polish out the corrosion in the second one. As for coating them: I know there are sprays you can use to make stuff like this food safe, but I can't remember what it is.

Great find by the way. The goblets look great.

I'll shoot Keiko a message about this. She's a super-metalsmith.

the sheen on those looks like brass, so the oxidation shouldn't kill ya. pour in some diet coke and work it into the corroded area with a rag, see if that cleans it up a bit.

off the top of my head i don't know any spray to protect em.

Looks like solder from them brazing the bases on. Those were probably intended to be display-only and may very well NOT be food-safe. You definitely want to seal them or get a hands-on appraisal from someone who really knows their stuff.
