Trim

Postby The Prophet » Tue Aug 09, 2011 1:04 am

On the latest garb I have been making I have been adding trim, it has come out well, but it is difficult to do. So my question is, What is the best material to use and the easiest way to make trim for garb? Thanks.

The absolute easiest thing you can do to trim out garb is to use bias tape. Apart from that, there are sites where you can find more intricate trims to use if you're looking to go the extra mile.

What kind of trim?

Bias tape as mentioned is good for thin solid color edge trim.

Tablet woven trim is great for more intricate patterns.

An appliqued or hand-stitched facing is a good plan for more interesting shapes of trim than a flat-edged rectangle.

Hand embroidery is an easy way to add flair.

A few questions on the bias tape,
Where would I find it?
How much is it?
Is it all the same, or do I select a specific kind over another?
It's not about how big your stick is, it's how you use it!

Most fabric stores pack bias tape. The brand really doesn't matter too much.

It folds in half on the center line there as well. What you do is stitch one of those inner edges there onto the edge of your fabric, then fold it over and top stitch it. It'll make more sense once you can hold it and see how it lines up.

It's pretty cheap, too. Don't know a number off the top of my head.

You can make your own bias tape, too, from the fabric you want:

If you stitch your strips together, you can make very long strips!

Posted this in the thread that was linked too as well, but buy one of these and make your own bias tape. It's super easy. http://www.clover-usa.com/product/268134/464/Bias_Tapes_&%3B_Bias_Tape_Makers/Bias_Tape_Makers

Making continuous bias tape (so you don't have to piece together all those strips) is pretty sweet, too.

I collect most of my bias tape through thrift stores, estate and yard sales, and in lots on Ebay. I usually find them still wrapped in their plastic, and they rarely run me more than a quarter each. These finds won't always stop you from running to Joann Fabric for a better-matching color, but it's a painless way to stock up on shades you'll probably need at some point.
