Is can be monster time?

Postby Bear » Mon Aug 01, 2011 12:43 pm

So, I have been looking into becoming a monster for quite a while but only since seeing all the great monsters at Chaos have I actually started to seriously consider it. So my question is what kinds of monsters are there and what are their signature garb styles?

I was actually thinking of the more exotic monsters. For example, I had a short conversation with someone at Chaos about Sea Trolls but have yet to find any actual information on them. This is not to say that the other monsters are not quite as good but that I would like to hear what all my options are before choosing :)

That's kind of the beauty of monsterdom. If there isn't already a monster history of the type you want to be, you are kind of free to make it up.

While I still haven't decided exactly what I want to become yet I would like to know a little more about monster garb in general.

What are are some signature pieces of general monster garb?

War-Braids
Patches
Tattered/Torn cloth
Fur
Body Paint/War Paint

as far as monster garb goes, the imigination is the limit! Add in unit or realm colors
requirements and you have a place to start. Generally you see tattered clothes, patches,
wwarbraids, etc..but there's nothing saying you can't have nice garb either, look at Zeldrine's garb...very fancy orc.

the biggest defining factor for most monsters is how one portrays themselves to others.
gotta remove the pinky face paint to show the true beauty beneath.

Any monster that tries to follow some sort of code or set of rules to appear monstery is going to look like a wannabe. You have to develop your own style through trial and error. Personally, I think patches and warbraids look more rasta than monster. Just some tips:

Make use of color. Blacks and browns are fine as an accent color, but if it's your primary color, you risk looking like a goth. On the flip side, too much color and you can look like you got lost on your way to the gay pride parade.

Get accessories. Probably the trickiest thing to do right. Bracelets and belts from goodwill will always look like bracelets and belts from goodwill so don't bother. Make stuff with what you find in the street or on the field or in a box in your attic. Scraps of fabric, feathers, cord, etc. Unless you're vegan use real bones, not plastic; real leather, not vinyl. Wear a hat or a mask or a crazy sleeve thing or whatever.

Invent clothing (and armor). Instead of wearing a tunic, rip it down the middle and turn it into a jacket. Instead of wearing pants, tear two pair apart and stitch them together to make a skirt. Don't like wearing sleeves? Cut them off. Want to wear 4 belts instead of just 1? You get the idea. Puck had these cool pants with padding sewn into the knees so he didn't have to wear kneepads.

Accent your garb. Runes, fur, holes, stains and danglies make plain garb awesome. Don't overdo it.

Oh, and I think you'd make a good bugbear.

Thank you everyone for the help in allowing me to decide exactly what I would like to become. You have shown me that being a monster isn't about what kind of monster you are but the fact that you get to express your gooey primal innards. That being said I've decided to **** the rest and just be a god * badass whether that is through being a Goblyn, Bugbear, Troll, or Anthropomorphic Beast.

I've started kicking around plans in my head for garb while keeping my eye out for inspiration in unlikely places.

Giggles: Thank you for the tips and I do agree that accessories are certainly the hardest part of garb.

Fork: Thanks for pointing me to Ulfblood, hes got some great stuff going on.

As for suggestions on what kind of monster you should be, I've wanted to see Corsair Orks for a while. I would be one myself but living in an almost entirely landlocked state it seems kind of silly. Garb would be pretty piratey with monster influences and blue dyed skin (orks are blue).

I had run through that idea at one point but had trouble picturing it in my head. I must say though, it was near the top of the list for a while.

Differences in culture on different sides of the country. Out east, orcs (and most hobgoblyns I know) are blue, while Goblyns are green. I know how confusing that can be. Trust me, I experienced a lot of it at Chaos when people asked me if I was an orc and I said "no, I'm a Goblyn".

I imagine things would be different if we had a large unit of orcs out here, but we don't. Goblyns are the most prevalent monster race, so they kinda get to say what color they are. Whereas I know 2 orcs from the east and they're blue because 1) they haven't been orcs as long as the Goblyns have existed and 2) they are very much outnumbered by Goblyns. It's just how eastern monster culture has worked itself out over the past 10 years.

I've been hemming and hawing for years over getting my monster kit together and I've always wanted to portray a redcap goblin. If you can find something awesome for folklore than I'd suggest checking that out too.

Yes Fork, your opinion of what an imaginary creature looks like is much more correct than mine. Tell you what, you can be a regular ork and stay green, I'll just be a tundra ork, keep being blue. That sound fair? You can even go on questioning the sexuality of people you've never met as a method of enforcing your view on the interwebs. Please post a picture of yourself dyed green to acknowledge acceptance of this accord.
