Making Garb

Postby Ticonderoga » Wed Oct 05, 2011 8:01 am

Hey I was searching and didnt turn up much for my situation. I have about 3-4 yards of cloth thats like 3-4 feet wide and i'd like to know what kind of garb I can make with that, probably nothing fancy because it's all black but I'm soon to be getting more cloth I'm thinking white and gold maybe some darker reds along with it. when I do get that stuff I have some fake blood and I feel like spreadig it on the arms and chest area. but anyways tell me what you think I can do. not really going for spectacular

What kind of cloth is it?

You also need to look up a pattern - they're all over the place. Unless you're ridiculously, overly morbidly obese that should be enough to make a nice tunic for you.

It all depends on what type of cloth you have. You'll also probably want to add some contrasting trim, or applique work if you want to get fancy.

You can look up patterns on your own - try geddon.org, another search here, the Dag website, or google.

I suppose a legit question is "can you sew?" By hand? Machine? Do you have access to someone who can? Who has a machine?

Find a pattern for a basic tunic. Make it.
Do not put fake blood on your clothes. that would be dumb. It's sticky.
This ain't a halloween costume. Find the pattern, FOLOW THE DIRECTIONS, wear new tunic.

Yeah i can sew and my mommy can as well (yes i live with mom mainly because im fourteen) but not really aiming for fancy quite yet just some basic stuff that allows me to fight at events. oh and I dont rember but it was the closest the store had to the recommended cloth for sword covers not thick really but good enough. and Forkbeard this stuff aint that bad no it's not home made because last time I did that it was a nightmare but the real movie stuff it dries in thirty seconds but comes out real easy. anywasy it's not stick only when soaked but i'm not goanna use it. however where can I look for a good basic pattern other than google or bing or yahoo.

That's an excellent tutorial to start with, but Alric wrote it years ago, and it badly needs to be updated. As written, it produces ENORMOUS sleeves and an unflatteringly baggy silhouette.

So! I don't cut out 8" underarm gussets. 6" should be fine.

24" sleeveheads are redonk. I promise (having sewn dozens of Bocksten tunics for people of all different sizes) that unless you are a mammoth, you seriously don't need to cut them that large. Shoot, even if you are a mammoth, measure the circumference of the widest part of your bicep and add maybe 5-6". Use that measurement instead for the top of your sleeve.

You'll now have a trapezoid sloping from 'circumference of your bicep + 5" down to 14". The difference between the two measurements is less than the tutorial wants (it wants a 24" trapezoid sloping down to 14"). That means your waste triangles (labeled 'gores' on the diagram) will be much smaller than the tutorial intends. Your tunic's 'skirt' will be too narrow. To make the tunic wide enough, I piece together two triangles from the waste to make one gore or just throw out those scraps and cut out new gores.

Alric's tutorial figures your gores will be as tall as your sleeves, since he cuts them out of the sleeve waste. On most dudes who wear their tunics pouched up, this works okay, but if you intend to wear your tunic unbelted, or if you're a lady, I find longer, fuller gores to be much more helpful.

So! Alric's pattern is reasonably efficient in that it wastes very little fabric, but it also needs to be tweaked in a few spots. The dude who wrote that tutorial doesn't even cut his tunics that way anymore.

Aaaaand I'm sorry that this is incoherent and ranty. We were just talking today about how badly this tutorial needs to be redone, so it's been on my mind.

I saw that garb can't have names or logos on them, but is it acceptable to  put out realms logo onto our garb? :axes:

Modern logos are not allowed. Realm logo's are allowed.

Yes. In general, the rule is to avoid blatantly modern garb. When it says "logos," the general thought is to avoid having the Nike swoosh or anything like that visible. Realm symbols, personal heraldry, etc. are all acceptable.

Twice now, you've sniped me on these, Tails. Haha.

Depends. What's your Realm's "logo"? Is it obviously modern or break any other rule outlined in the garb rules in the BoW?
