Historically Accurate Tents

Postby Plithut » Mon Nov 21, 2011 7:51 pm

Recently I have been moving more and more towards medieval camping. I came across this site and it is super inexpensive for what they have. I figured I would pass on the knowledge to you guys!

Very cool, thanks for the link.

A married couple in our realm build yurts using old trampoline frames, some wood and metal poles, and painter's canvas/tarp. We're working on building one now for the realm and its a fun deal. Certainly requires a lot of labor and know-how to get it all together (initial construction, not set-up at events), but it is relatively cheap if you can scavenge the parts.

Originally I was looking at doing my own yert as well, but looking at the price I decided this might be the better alternative.

We've been looking at trying to "period" up our tent more. A couple of problems we've found with actual period tents are either they have a lot of guy ropes which often mean that the tent has a footprint almost twice the size of the actual tent and the cost of pre-made tents.

Here are a couple of links to check out:

http://currentmiddleages.org/tents/index.html

The first has some ideas on how to convert a modern pop-up into a "medievalish" tent. This is something we've been considering since they are so easy to put up, have a fairly small footprint, and pack pretty compactly. Unfortunately the second one has quite a few dead links.

We've helped Bo put up his yurt (I think it's either a 16' or 20') and while it looks cool as hell and has a lot of space, it's a lot of work to set up, take down, and takes up a large amount of space in the vehicle with the rolled khana, the canvas, and the roof poles.

I've had the exact opposite experience with my yurt/gher, Kyrian.

It has been a space saver compared to our old A-frame. We no longer have to take the trailer to bring our tent.

Mind you, any period tent will never roll up to the same size as an equivalent modern earth pimple.
