Garb grade leather

Postby Juggernaut » Mon Jan 16, 2012 12:11 pm

So, I have this tailor who makes me some great stuff, including he says, jerkins and hoods made from 4-6 oz. leather. He usually asks his clients to supply the leather and then he charges a sewing shipping fee. He said that deer leather is great for this type of clothing.

I also have this friend, who is an avid hunter. I asked him what he does with the deer hides and he responded that he typically dumps them in the trash. He keeps and freezes the meat.

So, have any of you encountered a situation like this? Have you worked with a tannery/taxidermist to get tanned/finished hides from raw animal skin? I don't know if this is more cost effective than simply buying the thinner leather from a leather retail/wholesale outfit.

Just trollin to see if anyone has gone down this path. We gotta have some hunters on these boards.

I do know how to tan hides. However it is a smelly process, that needs a large outdoor space and time, lots of time. If you want to know the details shoot me a pm!

Hmmm maybe this is an opportunity to learn this skill. Tanning hides is sort of a post-apocalyptic necessity. I have access to secure open spaces. I will learn this!

Just remember, A dear has enough brains to tan its own hide so tell him to keep the brain. Ive done this and it takes about 7 months to do it correctly.

my roommate got some deer hides to tan, but didn't take care of it fast enough and the winter hit. Whatever you do don't let that happen, thawing non tanned deer hides are a thing of abject horror
