Cloak as a defensive weapon

Postby Glithar » Sun Mar 11, 2012 8:19 pm

A friend of mine is thinking for his garb, he will wear a cloak. But what he wants to know is if he is allowed to use a cloak as a defensive weapon, like to flair it in front of others and use it to block there weapons or entangle and pull there weapons. is this legal?

We have someone on our field who does this on occasion. I think he figured out it's more trouble then it's worth. Makes more sense to spend time beating people then trying to come up with clever ways to trick them THEN beat them.

Thanks, ill pass that on to him. do you think it would be more advantageous to not have a cloak at all?

I actually fought in my cloak for the first time today and while working great for archery alone, I would not fight like that on a regular basis. Maybe it's just my cloak but it made retrieving other weapons on my body difficult and was more in the way. Reminded me of The Incredibles and "No Capes!"

Depending on how heavy the cloak is, I'd say yes. I find they can be restricting in terms of movement and speed. As well as entangling when you don't want it to be.

Interesting.

I'd overheard a similar (hypothetical) conversation at ...... Yestare a couple years ago and the opinion came out to be that if the cloak was just hanging out there in the breeze while a person was moving, then any weapon hits that solely struck the cloak could be called as garb and all would be fine with the world. However, if the person was trying to be Zorro and intentionally use the cloak to interfere with other players then it would fall under entanglement and be an illegal move; creative interpretation, etc.

It would be like a net, a specifically forbidden item, and therefore illegal.

I'll have to echo TC on the entanglement issue. This just sounds like an injury in the making.

Actually, this has come up before and is totally illegal. Tell the people who do it they must stop.
It is an entangling issue, Entangling devices are illegal.
It is garb, garb can not block against weapons for game purposes.
Do what you want at you own practice, but at inter-realm events, don't do this.

Also, a word of caution: if you're determined to wear a cloak on the field, have some kind of quick release on it. I've seen a lot of new players who want to wear cloaks, and I've seen this happen more than once-- newbie is running around, someone grabs/steps on their cloak, instant choke-slam. So, not only will it get in your way and trip you up, it could also seriously hurt if something like that happens.

Better to leave the cloak at home. Garb isn't worth injuries.

I have a cloak for my character, but only wear it as part of my feast garb. I tried fighting in it once and won't make that mistake again...unless ur fond of choking. Other than that, I would agree with everyone else. More hassle than it's worth and not recommended.
