Front page Board applet?
Posted: Mon Apr 28, 2003 5:50 pmIt's simple, do enough people (other than myself) use the applet on the front page to quickly read the messageboard, for me to re-write it for the new board?

J/k I actually never use it because there are normally more newer posts on the board than displayed and so I find that I have to view the board anyway.

How would you like it to work? Do you want it to grab more posts? Like List the last 5 post for the day that have been created or replied to? Do you want me to make it so it stores a cookie and you can change the forum it registers for you?
It's not like everything is possible. Try me and I will see if we can figure it out.
For now I am going to start to look into what hellish things I will have to jump into to get the applet back working on the front page. When I get home tonight the old applet is going to die, and hopefuly soon I will have written the new applet for this phpboard for the front.
Oh yeah and it's an applet because you guys can put it on your webpages if you DL it from out server. On the Old board I psoted links to it in Zip format along with installation instructions.

Posted: Tue Apr 29, 2003 11:20 amI only use the applet to get to the web board because I can't view the sidebar. That's been mostly taken care of by bookmarks, but the statement still stands.

Posted: Tue Apr 29, 2003 4:51 pmWell, quite frankly, I'd like to see the Flash got rid of, because Flash is abused in so many locations that I won't install it. It doesn't even appear to be doing anything more elaborated than a single-cycle animated GIF could do, either.

That is a fair question. As a general rule I frequent the board maybe once a day. The real challenge is that there are so many posts, in a day that I do not think it practical or reasonable to code it after my uses, it seems to be that those who use it most are those who are able to keep a constant eye upon the board's happenings.
I think though for the principle of other sites being able to use it to check on the board. I think it acceptable the way it was done with the latest from each catagory displayed, showing site visitors a taste of what is discussed upon our board. That is how I would expect it's use upon our local site, not as a way to constantly monitor the board.
