F!*# Google.

Postby Sir Cairbre » Tue Jan 31, 2006 6:54 am

If you have been living in a hole on the internet since last frieday you will know that Google the most successful internet search engine of all times gave everyone in the world a giant heeping * up the rear. Make the story short Google use to have a "do no evil" clause in their company, well money finnaly won out, on Friday they did 2 things that went against that. A. They removed the disclaimer saying they won't re-order the results manualy on their site. and B they opened a version of Google in china only the chineese government controles the whole system so terms like Christianity and Democracy produce anti those ideas's if a search is performed. This goes against the very principles that many people believed in google for. As a result I am going to stop using googles search engine. And probably their e-mail service.

If anyone out there cares.. http://www.kartoo.com is probably the next super inovation of web search engines. Have fun.

How about they agreed to filter their search results because it's better to have some Western influence than none? They can't get everything, and some things will slip through. It's probably only a matter of time.

Actualy the mis-spelling of words causes information to leak through the cracks. But the point is they have turned away from their do no evil.

They're also the only major search engine that's fighting the DoJ's anti-porn fishing expeditions... .

Well its probably not really google's choice how the chinese gov't censors the search results. If i'm interpreting this right, it could be that if google made a seperate but similar search engine with the logo and copyright information, etc of google, but handed all control, and rights of ownership over to the chinese government, then google techinqually has no right to dictate what can and cannot be censored. Plus i think since its now a government controlled engine, it doesnt have to fall under rules of service for publicly and corporately owned engines.

think of it like: you built someone a web page, and gave them control over it, and they have to maintain it, pay for it, etc. you probably no longer have any legal right to dictate what is presented or not presented on that site, even if you did build it, because now expressed ownership is held by someone else.

Plus, i doubt that this will affect how we use google. I dont think the chinese version of google, will also filter out the versions used in the united states.

*note to readers* if you are all mad that maybe a record of your search results is being viewed by the CIA and/or gov't officials/offices, then dont do anything that would be incriminating. If the CIA wants to know how often i search for information on flash games, or bug on a wire, then go ahead, like it matters.

I don't think this is anything new. Various governments have been filtering Internet content for a while now. Google's essentially just making their services multinational. It really isn't any different than a company making different websites specific to the user's region. It's just that it's Google that it's drawing attention. It's called coding with the client in mind, and China's a big client for Google.
