Bots love us too much.

There has been some weird spamming on the wiki lately.

Code: Select all

I pulled that out of Heraldry.
http://www.geddon.org/index.php/Category:Heraldry

It came from 122.30.233.33
Can that address be IP banned from the wiki or something?

It's coming from more than one IP.

IPs that have spammed the wiki:

59.5.162.240
72.232.93.249
82.51.166.47
122.30.233.33
200.118.2.165
201.24.232.30
202.101.237.66
210.91.22.32
222.172.222.79

And fine, 72.232.93.249 didn't really spam, but the rest of them have all posted some kind of nude or drug links. Banning IPs one by one wont stop spam because anyone from any IP can edit a page and insert links. Making sign-ups mandatory defeats the whole purpose of a community-accessible page, so that wont work either. Really, the best way to fight spam is for folks who check on the wiki every now and then to catch it and delete it.

I no nothing about PERL, but I found this on the regular wiki and maybe it could be of some help to our spam problem on Geddon.org:

Shadowbot
Source Code
FAQ

Again... don't know anything about implementing it, or how it works, but I was just randomly searching the wiki and this bot was listed under "spam" somewhere for how wikipedia deals with its spam.

Can the Wiki login system be changed so that you must be a member and log in to edit or create pages? All of the spam it gets is from nonmember guests.

It's been getting really bad and I think that doing that would slow it down if not stop it.

The Wikipedia requires logging in to edit and this is probably one f the the reasons why.

We could

We could, but it would force many people to then register who have not.

Set the robots permissions to off:
<html>
<head>
<meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow">
<title>...</title>
</head>

That would be counter intuitive to having Google index our pages by design.

Oh. I didn't know you did that.

Btw, are there any plans for a Firefox Search Bar plugin for the Belegarth Wiki?
