word filter

Postby Ricket » Thu Nov 13, 2008 8:27 am

When I turn off the word filter in my preferences, this means that I can see my own swear words, but can another user see them if they have their word filter on? I'm assuming not, but that's *.

If someone else has their filter on, they wont be able to read your swears. But i can read anything you write with my filter off.

This was the best compromise we had. Half of the people on the boards were screaming that we needed to filter out profanity and the other half were screaming that we need no censorship. This way, it's up to the individual user if they want to see it or not.

Ricket, why would you want to force users to read your profanity when by having the filter on they've made it clear that they choose not to?

Also, what would be the point to a "filter" if all it did was allow you to censor yourself?

I don't know, how does it feel to have your words changed?

I advise cleverly placing profanities into a humorous, non-offensive avatar.

Ricket,
The changes you made changed the meaning of the post.
Filtering out profanity doesn't change the meaning. It just roots out the garbage. If the meaning doesn't change, why do you care if I ignore the profanity?

It does change the meaning.

The default setting should be filter off, and new users should have to go figure out how to turn it on if they want. Eh?

War Council asked derian to put a filter on the boards. He could have made it so that the individual didn't have an option of having it off. instead of complaining about the work he did to allow you to swear if you want to, you should be thanking him.

No, it does not change the meaning. It may make it a little unclear but one can usually catch the drift of the message. If one really wants to know exactly what profanity is used, one can turn off the filter. Personally, I don't really care to know the exact wording, so I leave the filter on.

I would prefer that profanity be banned as I think it makes Belegarth look bad to outsiders who browse these forums. However, I think the filter is a good compromise (especially if it defaults to on). Hopefully, some people will stop the immature attempts to circumvent the filters.

Ricket bub,

That's an old debate that's water under the bridge. Believe me, I agreed with you at one point, it was annoying to see "farking and *" replace other select words of mine. However, as I became a more responsible realm leader... I eventually saw the P.R. nightmare that profanity on a board can be. You don't know me personally, but I'm sure members of my realm (and even some admin on the board) can attest to how bad my mouth is. I feel profanity has no place on a board meant to improve our public image and bring in new members; it looks childish and unprofessional.

Personally, I appreciate the compromise. You should too...
