May I suggest locking down new memeberships to the board for a little bit? Looks like the spammer just made another login

while I agree that we need to do something about this, I don't think thats the way about solving it.

I'm not very good with networks, but is this guy logging on through the same IP address each time? Or are we dealing with a setup that gets around that?
Just mentioning because I've heard of IP banning, but I'm not familiar with the effectiveness.

Nope, they all come in from different IP addresses.

I know it's a hassle, but you could just switch it to admin/mod permission.

I'm open to alternatives.

Really the only viable solution is to put in a challenge question. Because of the setup we have, this isn't as simple as you'd think, it's actually a pain in the *.
There is no way I'm going to turn on admin authentication. I don't have 2 hours a day to sit and sift through new members.

But that advanced text system in the registration only section of the board files... It's as simple as downloading, uploading two files the server, and adding one line of code to one php file. It's not perfect, it's not pretty, but I haven't had a spammer since install.

Yeah, I'm hesitant to put something in that gives you a free trial as a permanent solution.

For anyone who wants to report these guys to me, the best way to do so is to give me a link to their profile. I can delete the user and all their posts in a couple quick clicks.

Occasionally, good things are free. Seems to be worth doing until a permanent solution is found. *shrug*

It's pretty much at the max strength it can get without being illegible. phpBB really needs to implement a challenge question option, because all the mods I've found that do it are turrible.

You can make a challenge questions. I have on all the other boards I manage. It is usually a simple math problem. What is Seven + 3 =?.
Here is a the tutorial:

It's not that I don't know how to do a challenge question or need help coming up with some, it's that the functionality to require them for registration is not present in phpBB and I'm hesitant to hack it up for risk of problems down the road.

The concept is pre-built into PhpBB's current ACP. You create a new field in the users profile. Like our "Favorite Fighting Style" text field. Then you set the description to "What is 3+4?" and make it a numeric field. Then you set the only acceptable answer as "7" and the field is required at registration. You then might want to make the field invisible after registration accept to the user. It is not a hack at all, just a custom configuration.
