I'm trying to upload a picture to the Wiki and I keep getting an error: "The upload directory (public) is not writable by the webserver."

So, shyeah.

Lol, I already fixed most of your issues without even seeing this post.

The only thing you really have left to fix is upload the picture you want to use to the Wiki instead of just copy-pasting the photobucket link. It doesn't work that way. Once you upload it to the Wiki, you can just use the code [[Image:name of picture here.jpg or JPG or whatever]] and that'll do it. There are other little tricks you can use to manipulate it, and I'd suggest just reading through the picture section of Galya's Simplified Guide to Editing the Wiki for that. Not meaning to self-promote, but I DID write it to help new people out.

Oh, and you do need [[Category:People]] in there somewhere, but that should be about it.

Derian: the daily bot spam on the wiki is ridiculous. I know you're busy, but is there anything which can be done?

I'm more concerned about this, honestly. It's seriously to the point where there's between 300-400 bots per day, posting nearly twice that many spam pages. Brooder has pretty much given up at this point, and I can't keep up with it all by myself.

I hate to suggest it Galya, but is there a way to lock the wiki (and manually approve edits)?

Edit: or can we lock new accounts, and manually approve them?

If there are that many bots/edits, and the "Recent Changes" page can only go back 500 edits, can we even do anything about ones further back than that? (Unless we accidently stumble upon them?)

I have a solution lined up that I just need to implement. We should be able to require a Q&A captcha (similar to how we stopped the spam bots on the boards) for all edits. A minor inconvenience for real people, but it should stop bots in their tracks.

Awesome! That works for me. :)

How long will it take to implement?

Probably not too long, the issue is that I'm at work right now and can't actually access the server in order to do it. I should be able to get it tonight.

I may also have a way to clear out a majority of the existing spam automatically.

:D Yay! I was not looking forward to doing that myself.

Derian, you are a fantastic human being. Or at least a fantastic webmaster. I'm so floored by the lack of spam now it's almost like I don't know what to do with myself. :)

What was the work-around for the image uploading difficulties? I am getting the same error messages listed above:

Geddon.org wrote:Internal errorFrom BelegarthWiki
Jump to: navigation, search
Set $wgShowExceptionDetails = true; at the bottom of LocalSettings.php to show detailed debugging information.

Geddon.org wrote:Upload warningThe upload directory (public) is not writable by the webserver.

I'm using the same method to upload images that I have used successfully in the past, but can't make any headway. Any advice?

Hate to necro, but this is still happening. No pics have been uploaded since January. Any solution in sight? I made a spiffy little page and it looks bland without pics.

I have made Derian aware of the situation, he said he is working on a solution.
