Exactly why dont shots to the hands and feet count?

I like to think of it more along the honor system of Belegarth, Just seems kind of cheap to hit someone in the foot which isnt hard to hit as compared to 4 in up the leg or vise a versa for the arm.

I always thought it was safety.

We want to DISCOURAGE these areas from being hit, as they are more fragile parts of the body. So, we make hits there not count.

I don't think they forsaw punch blocking though....

The reason for the foot is because if attempt to hit the foot, you will often instead hit the ground. With all the force going into the ground. The attacker thinks they hit (solid ground shot), the target thinks they missed (no force into foot).

The hand issue is primarily safety.
1.) We don't want people targeting hands (they break easily).
2.) We generally don't want people to be wearing metal hand armor.

Also, I thought I heard one explanation that the weapons are considered to have handguards? If you are looking for a reason related to realism.

I hadn't thought of that for the foot tho, gives a good explanation.

i don't think they can be considered to have handguards when it's easy enough to make them anyway, and not all swords had handguards. it would depend what period, place, and style of weapon you had.

while we're on the topic though, is there anything we can do to discourage non-handguard punch-blocking without causing safety issues for hands?

eh, if someone wants to block a sword with their fingers, feel free to do it, but know it's likely going to hurt a lot.
