Checking crossguards

Postby Arrakis » Sun Jul 13, 2008 2:47 pm

- Check to make sure pommel doesn't pass more than 0.5 inches through a 2.0 inch hole.

Kind of a pet peeve of mine.

Shouldn't that be, "Check to make sure pommel doesn't pass readily through a 2 inch hole."?

Also, could we get a rules change started to get

1.3.4. The Weapon pommel must not readily pass through a 2” diameter hole.

changed to

1.3.4. No part of any non-striking surface may pass more than 1/2" through a 2" diameter hole.

?

For less ambiguity, and to roll pommels and crossgaurds all in together and actually have a rule for them.

The way the rule is now, any pommel should be checked by placing a 2" template on it, and if the template stops at any on the pommel, it passes. The difference between a passing and not passing pommel could be a single strip of athletic tape. It doesn't matter according the rules how far the pommel passes through as long as the template stops.

I think both rules are fine, but that's not what this forum is for.

That rule change wouldnt work. Then we would have to have hand guards. One big reason cross guards dont matter is, it shouldnt end up in someones eye socket. Same as someones knuckles while holding a sword shouldnt end up in someones eye socket, yet your knuckle will fit through a 2" hole. So changing that rule is a horrid idea. Also some weapon tips will fit a ways through a 2" hole. And if it isnt a stabbing tip than it is a non-striking surface. So you get the idea.
My spelling sucks, Deal with it!

Perhaps you aren't familiar with the rule

1.3.3. Two and one-half inch rule-No surface on a striking edge (sword tip, arrow head, spear head, javelin head, etc.) whether designed for stabbing or not, may pass more than 0.5 inch through a 2.5 inch hole; swords with a semicircular tip, with a minimum 1.5 inch radius are exempt from this rule. See Appendix A, 1.4.4.2.

That means that if your sword tips are passing significantly through a 2" hole, your weapons are FAILING.

Knuckles aren't part of our rules governance because it's already illegal to punch people.

Well, you hijacked the thread turning it into something different, you should start a new thread instead of moving this one.

Just throwing this out there, but heralds already have the right to fail a weapon for any perceived safety concerns, even those not outlined in the BoW. An ultra-thin crossguard would probably fall under this category.
