cored and coreless shields

Postby Timid » Tue Oct 21, 2008 2:15 pm

Hey, I was just wondering what kind of interest there would be in trying to balance out the shields with a rule change. In my mind, the coreless shields provide a great advantage in more speed and less weight. You can hold them further away from your body then you can when it's strapped to two points on your arm, and there isn't really anything to balance them and make them less effective than a cored shield of the same size. I've talked about this with the people in my realm, and we feel it could be easily balanced by making coreless shields take one hit from a red sword to break. They are lighter, so they are supposedly mimicking a shield made of a lighter and less durable substance, so as far as realism *gasp* I think that makes sense, and it also favors variety by taking away the inherent advantage of coreless shields.

Other options include:

A) making cored shields take three hits and coreless take two (I think that's just too many hits to get in and makes cored shields that much more powerful)

B) Something I haven't thought of yet

C) changing nothing

Thoughts?

You should do a search, this has been discussed at length a number of times previously.

The general consensus seems to be that the disadvantages inherent to punch shields, the difficulty in coming up with a rule that would effectively regulate which shields qualify as punches and the hassle involved with changing the rules outweigh the benefits.

Sorry about that. I tried searching through topics because I really didn't want to bring it up if it had already been discussed, and of course forgot the simplicity of the search function. If there's a way to delete this post could you go ahead and do that?

Don't forget: There are coreless strap shields and cored punch shields.

Again, you're delving into the issues I mentioned above.

There are certainly good arguments on both sides. If you (or anyone) wants to continue the discussion, dig up that thread. If you have something to contribute to the discussion as opposed to just saying "HAY GUISE THAT SOUNDS GOOD", then that would be a good example of when it is acceptable to zombify a thread.
