Claw idea I want to hear the thoughts of high ups on this

Postby Myles » Wed Oct 20, 2010 9:49 pm

I have been doing a huge amount of reading of rules and regulations in the

past 2 months because i have moved and been starting my own realm

anyways I saw that claws were banned flat out now I understand that

banning them was for safety and not wanting it to turn into boxing and

other such things but I feel with a few regulations that could be easily

avoided and still keep them a fair weapon to use and the way that it would

be built as to where it should be safe.

First off the basic build of it it would be 2 squares of pipe using joints one

would go around the wrist and the second would be up the side of the

hands and across the back of the hand and all of this would have to be half

padded. For the blades they would be 2 clubbed daggers with at least the

outer layer and tips as open cell foam. Instead of having normal handles

and such they would be attached to the pipe joints and bonded in place

such they would fit into joints on the sides of the box around the back

of the hand. Then from the same spots that the claws them selfs attach a

piece cloth would going through the pipe and around the hand for a strap.

I also see how they have the potential to be dangerous from the amount

of force that can be generated from a full force punch with it, but arrows are

still aloud even though they are very dangerous because of the unpadded

shaft and notched end of them but they are still aloud. Not to mention the fact

that I keep on seeming to hear about the broken noses from Javs though part of

that is the amount of weight behind them though I saw that there was a large

discussion about the weight limit on them and nose breaking posted just before

this.

Another thing is the regulations I would suggest placeing for them

1. Tip of both clubs must be open cell foam. and outer layer is suggested as well as open cell.

2. Only one claw may be used at a time in any official matches like with shields.

3. No other class 1 or 3 weapons may be held in same hand as claw is in.

4. When holding a claw if you are struck on your palm or underside of your fingers you are to take it as a bare arm shot even though it would technically be hand on weapon. So put simply no grabbing another persons weapon blade.

My last point in this is that these would be mainly a secondary weapon for red

fighters for if they lose an arm or for close combat I tried to take out any loop

poles that would be in this weapon, tried to make it a fair weapon and to make it

a safe weapon still. Thoughts on this please tell me. I am also making it because I

feel like it but it shall not be used unless approved once done i will post pics of it

on this thread. The picture it drawn by my girlfriend it is of the basic build of it.

They still fail because their intent of stabbing makes them a punching weapon. Good on you for putting more thought into it, but you're still wrong.

The comparison that you made to arrows is a bit different. Yes, they have the potential to be dangerous. However, they have rules put in place to make sure that they are as safe as can be. With your weapons, the punching motion is not safe with as small of a surface as the tips would put forward. I don't know if you've been to any events, but here is an example. Would you want Killian (big guy, steel worker by trade, built like a truck) to punch you in the gut with something like that? The answer should be no. Now, do you think that anyone else wants to get stabbed in the gut at all with someone throwing a hook that they can put even more force behind than a stab with a spear? Again, the answer should be no.

Good attempt. Put this ingenuity into non-punching weapons and I'm sure you'll come up with something cool.

Claws allow too much of a 'punching motion' and that type of motion can cause a LOT of damage. Look at boxers, they're wearing 1lb gloves to try and cause enough physical damage to their opponent that they are unable to keep fighting.

Stabbing weapons force your wrist into a different angle, which reduces the amount of force that can be applied. Swinging also reduces the force that can be applied.

Anyways...scrap the idea, it can only cause more harm than good. Look for tonfa (sp?) and punch weapon threads on these forums. You'll get a lot of information from those threads.

Also geddon.org explains things out pretty well.

Archery is not a good example because bows have a force cap which they cannot exceed (35# * 28" inches). In your weapon's case, they bigger/stronger the individual, the harder your weapon will hit.

There are no staffs in Belegarth. Because of how they are constructed, they are really Pugil Sticks.

The best ways to give back to the sport are the least glamorous:

Start off by helping pick up trash on the last day of any event you go to and making sure your camp is clean when you leave. Volunteer to help herald or check weapons; better yet, ask to shadow an experienced herald or be apprentice to an experienced weapons checker for a day or two to really get the hang of it, first. Learn foamsmithing from anyone who'll teach you and always be willing to learn some more (no one ever knows everything) then help your new Realm learn to build good, solid, sturdy, weapons. Sew basic garb for your newbies. Give your time to help organize.

Good on you for wanting to help.

I was gonna be mean, but listen to Arrakis. This is what our sport always needs more of.
We don't need revamps of weapons we banned years ago. We need people pickin up trash.

The way your design is built, you are using a brace against your wrist to steady the weapon. Get the blade caught in a shield or in a grapple and you may well break your wrist. Instead of pipes, see if you can use some cloth strapping for more give under heavy pressure.
