Javelin Weight Change

Postby Sir Anastasia » Wed Oct 31, 2012 5:40 pm

Hey all,

I think that Dag may be considering a rule change to reduce weight maximums for javelins and I was wondering if anyone had any data regarding injuries before and after the rules change. It makes sense to me that lighter objects hitting your head do less damage, F=MA, but I wondered if we had something more than that. If we do, I will go ahead and give it to the people asking.

My data: I know our area had 1 serious injury over 2 years before the rule change and 0 serious injuries since the rule change. Serious injury defined as requiring a hospital visit.

Thank you all for the help!

I've been doing head medic/medic since I started, and I've never taken anyone from any of our events(Fest/geddon/springwars/WPO/as-well-as several mini events) & realms (Tir Asleen/Rilltoc/Slums/Yggdrasil) to the hospital for javelin related injuries before or after. I will admit that in the realm aspect of my experience we have rarely used javelins.

In the early days of Thunder Guard (Prior to the Javelin rules change and prior to my involvement in the sport), we had one serious hospital injury from a javelin. At the time, weapons check was not regularly conducted in the realm. This may have been partly to blame for the injury.

We now conduct weapons checks at most of our practices.

Since the rules change, we have had no further injuries from javelins.

I have not scene or experienced any bad injuries due to a Javalin- before or after new rule. Maybe a couple of bloddy noses in twenty years. I have scene more with arrows- bloody noses and black eyes...

Checking ALL missle weapons every time they are brought out is a good practice... every week at practice, every day at an event...
Maybe that is more than most- but it seems worth it in the long run.
