Glaive strategies

Postby Ryoma » Wed Jul 27, 2005 8:38 pm

I just blew $80 bucks on an Edhellen glaive, and I'm determined to get good with it. Does anybody have any good strategies for glaive use?

$80?

Man, I made mine for like $30- 40.

Ah the joys of foamsmithing. :)

Here's a link directly to Kyrax's Tutorial.

Read it a few times. Kyrax knows what he's talkin about.
Then ask specific questions. If I know the answers, I'll gladly provide em. If I don't Kyrax does.

I'd smith my own glaive, but everyone else in my realm has superior-quality Edhellen stuff, and I don't want to be technologically out of the loop.

Thanks for pointing out that guide.

Now all I need is a pell to practice on. Do furniture stores just sell couch cushions by themselves? I don't own a shield.

Glaives absolutely rock the house, with friends (which is a must) they can be some of the most fun weapons around. 8)

But when you start, be extra * careful with those high shots near anyone's head. A major probelm I've seen for years is in fixed position/channelized battles when newcomers to glaives borrow them from others and blast people in the head because they have not mastered this very dangerous shot. I've been using a glaive regularly for about 3-4 years now and I virtually never throw a straight up-and-down (vertical) shot, they ALWAYS come in at an angle and I'm prepared to move/put the brakes on if the target moves and a head shot seems possible. Ok, with that in mind, have fun and use it safely.

Oh, I'm in the glaives are spears (green) weapons that also can be used to hack with. Some folks go about it with the opposite mindset...[/img]

yea....i'd say use it more like a spear at first and use a swing only when necessary because youre puttting forth a lot of momentum to swing it, and if it's blocked, you'll be scrambling
also....you'll need to be fast
learn how to sidestep your opponent when they come in and learn to back peddle quickly
honestly....1 v. 1 (glaive v. shield) any competent shield man will win...so dont get discouraged
just find a buddy w/ a shield that you can work w/
a glaive/spear coupled w/ a shield user can be an extremely effective combo if both work together and complement each other

practice makes perfect <--------*very important*

also, a thing i always notice about newer red users...they always think: Reds break Shields!! I want to swing hard and break shields!!!
well, yes they do...of course
however....do not try to go and start breaking shields right away...aim for the person first (leg is a good target) and gimp them...now that they are gimped....you can break their shield and not get rushed

it's all about quickness and awareness when using such a heavy, large weapon
dont throw all your momentum into one swing unless you know it will hit or you dont have to worry about getting rushed

Last practice I went to, Spike let me borrow his spear and taught me that same trick, and also to hold the backup weapon and your spear in the same hand.

I carry a dagger in my belt for just such occasions. Definitely work with a buddy. Shieldman preferred.

...and don't stop hitting them until they're dead! I can't count the number of times I though I had a kill and it turned out to be an arm... then I died.

Around here, we have big junk pickup days, where people throw out sofas and whatnot. If there's something like that around there, just keep your eyes open.

Backup weapons are handy if you lose an arm. Polearms are pretty much totally unusable one-handed. If I lose an arm, the first thing I do is to drop my glaive and rush my opponent single blue.

at least you've got that down....i really dont like seeing people trying to use reds (especially glaives) one handed. For one, they are slow and unwieldy...and for two i see a lot of unneccesary headshots because of the inability to control them effectively w/ one hand
besides, you have a much greater chance w/ a blue than w/ a red sword or glaive IMO

and yea shrat, what is the "spin blocky thing?"

The spin blick is when I miss or someone trys to rush what I do is plant the spear tip slant like and then spin with the haft behind me then reset and stab.
works fairly well.

I think I know what shrat is talking about; what I am picturing is really just planting the speartip, and pivoting yourself under and around it. It is a good defense when you are on your own. Though it only works if you're skinny (like shrat) and/or quick about doing it.

I'm with shrat on the no-backups. I'm really not good at holding anything in my hands along with a spear/glaive. I've tried tucking things in my belt, but 99 times out of a hundred, I'll either never take it out, or die before I get it out. My best tactic to date has been the run-away-while-shouting-for-help-from-teamates routine. It works quite well if Galin is nearby and on my team.

I personally swear by backup weapons. Although by now I usually hang a dagger from my belt. Once I got used to it, I can pull it quick enough for a surprise punch-block (usually.)

At Okfest, I fought with a glaive exclusively and dropped the backup after the first battle. I worked with the same two sword and shield guys to begin with and hid behind them. My pattern was stab, stab, stab the opponent infront of me centersheild and at 300lbs and strong, I pushed them back opening their neighbor's sides. Slashes left and right would gimp or kill the exposed fighters.

Armor: where a helmet. I swear when I glaive my head is a javelin and arrow magnet. Also, all the frontal shots landed on left upper torso or left arm, so armor and buckler up you left side. -Nix

I used to fight spear with no side arm, but I worked on the fighting with a sword in the main hand and its actually pretty awesome. Until people figure out how to counter it I can used it to take on just about any one of the field. Granted, it usually takes secluded realms like us some time to find new moves and stuff, so we're probably way behind others.

get a backstrap sheild they are freakin awsome for glaive users

when your using the glaive like a spear you can hang it off your shoulder to use

plus if you get armed you can hang it off the shoulder where you don't have an arm and pull out your back up weapon

aside: killing newbs that come up and think they want a giant red weapon is fun one time i killed a glaive man with just a dagger (i LOVE my dagger!)
