Tips for a lefty fighting against lefties....

Postby Digoza » Wed Mar 22, 2006 11:57 pm

Well, realizing that I'm one of a select few in this sport who is left-handed, I probably won't (except in my realm which has like 5 or 10 of us out of the entire realm) face many lefties on the field of battle.

I was wondering if I could get some tips for fighting against other left-handed sword and board users. I'm used to fighting against right-handed fighters, so, the few times that I've faced other lefties, it generally starts out with me going "****, I forgot you were left-handed too.....grr...."

So, yeah, suggestions from either 1. other lefties who've fought lefties on a regular basis, or B. some suggestions from Righties since you guys are used to fighting people that are also righties.

Thanks,

lots of cross overs and wraps, if you ever watch a righty fight a righty it should be the same thing as lefty on lefty. same tricks as on a righty just through them cross ways pretty much, i am a righty by the way so this may be complete crap.

When I fought Lineage, which is the only lefty in my realm, I got wrap-shot over my shoulder while we were both fighting sword-and-board. What a way to lose a fight, right when it starts.

Next time, I think that I am going to go lefty when I fight him so that he can't do that. I am nearly ambidextrous, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, but you are at least answering the question I asked. So, what type of things do you righties do against other righties so that when next I fight a lefty, I have some know how as to what I'm doing?

yet again, I say, I'm a lefty, so I'm used to fighting against righties, so, I'm used to having openings on their right-side (my left), so, therefore, when I come up on another lefty, it's, for me, just like when you guys fight other righties, except everything is "backwards."

well you can throw a lot more cross overs on some one who uses same side than if you where fighting an opposite sider so if you got another lefty there will be alot more openings for cross overs instead of wraps and straight shots

You'll have the shoulder shot option on the shield arm now that it's across from your sword arm. If you see your opponents shield drop just a little, a quick strike to their shoulder is a good probe to test their defenses and if you're lucky you'll take that shield away from them. If you're used to hunting for your opponents arm, that should be an easy one for you. But to get a fellow lefty's arm you'll have to go cross body. You gotta be quick about it because its easy to lose your own arm if your opponent is expecting it. Legging is about the same, but the upper body work is just teaching yourself to fight on different angles than what you traditionally use. Hope this helps a little.

then you should fight rightie for a while (i've done this since i'm leftie)

this has one disadvantage: on the short term your skill will be decreased

however the advantages are great: you get experience to fight against other lefties and you get more experience with your right (in case you get armed)

That is good advice. It also goes under the idea of learning your enemies weakness by figthing as them.

I switch about four times a night when practicing. It hurts my strong side( lefty) fighting but helps my overall understanding of the sport. Last week i think my thumb was broken or otherwise seriuosly injuried.I still can't move it a week later, but i was able to switch hands and still fight as good as normal, so that too is an advantage. I couldn't have used a punch shield though, but my strappy was just fine.
