I notice people with sheilds tend to carry a second sword or a flail with them. Whats the purpose of this?

This is just in case they get their weapon knocked out of their hand, but their arm wasn't hit. A backup weapon could also be used for florentine when a combatant's shield gets broken.

Some people will carry a different-length sword to use at a different range, i.e., a short sword for up-close-and personal and/or opponent legged and a medium or long weapon for regular use.

for some it is a ranged weapon. I know in a unit a shield wall will move forward, throw the javs/rocks, then rush while the other side is still recovering.

For others the weapon they have is a distraction so that the other side doesn't see what is really coming.

I know a few people that actually make a 3 foot spear, not a jav, so they can keep it in their shield hand and give someone an unsuspecting jab.

Then again some people get flat out ridiculous with it, mostly new people. I've seen guys with a red in each hand and two blues tucked in their belts and STILL try to pick up a shield. I just laugh and walk away :D

You mock my mighty glaiventine style?!? I KEEL JOO!!!

Seriously, though, I've seen stuff like that myself; there's a point at which you're overarmed, and it will end up getting in your way.

An extra sword for an archer, polearm-wielder, or tucked behind a shield is one thing. 3 extra weapons "just in case" either means you're overthinking the game, or you need to hold on to your weapons better.

Or have seen too many movies. most of those actors can't hold onto more than 2 weapons durring the entire fight.

A longer sword held underhand in your shield hand can be used to parry shots off your legs as well, just have to be careful not to anvil.

I awlays carry a scramasax along the small of my back (short blue green fighting knife with right-hand draw) and a short sword (20" blade) I can draw with either hand on my left hip when arching or using a red weapon. If I have to drop my bow then I fighting with those two weapons. When fighting sword and shield I only carry the scramasax backup.

I just made one a couple weeks ago

they run about 19 inches long so grab a core that length

blue foam the flats with a single layer, then blue foam the non cutting edge with a single layer, then tripple layer your cutting edge, but make sure you go a little bit more than over the tip so it doesn't pass through the template since it's only about 2/3 the width of a normal double edge sword.
