How can "all-around fighter" be measured?

Postby Kyrian » Mon Apr 02, 2007 3:15 pm

So I had this idea of a theoretical tournament for determining the best all-around fighter with "all-around" being defined as someone who could pick up almost any weapon style and be deadly (but not unsafe) with it.

These were the styles I came up with:

1) Sword and board
2) Flail and board
3) Two weapon
4) Javelin
5) Archery
6) Two-handed sword
7) Single sword
8 ) Spear
9) Glaive
10) 2-on-1
11) 3-on-1
12) 4-on-1
13) Tank (fully armored)
14) Random weapons
15) Dagger [added based on your suggestions]
16) Mongolian wrestling [added based on your suggestions]
17) Sword & dagger

Also, can anyone think of any ways to quantify and measure battlefield presence and leadership? The weapon styles skills are fairly easy to measure in a tournament but battlefield leadership and presence are also important aspects of a fighter's skill.

Your thoughts?

Hrm, what about daggers? Or any close range weapon.

You also have the general battles and such or help gauge battlefield tactics and the ability to lead. For battlefield presence, look at how they work it in the field throughout the fights.

battlefield presence: overall effectiveness in war (things i try and tally mentally)

i cut everything in half, they either know i'm there or dont. the backstab numbers almost always dominate for me.

number of kills per battle.
- honorable
- backstabs

number of limbs cut off
-honorable
-backstabs

armor cut off
-honorable
-backstabs

then i keep tabs on how I died and what I lost in the same.

Yeah, it would be hard to judge things like intimidation factor, leadership, and awareness, which is arguably much more important than being able to use a weapon other than the one you normally use :)

Also, yes, maybe a single dagger round, a grappling round(start with dagger on the ground, and each figher 20 feet or so away), and maybe even a mongolian wrestling round(optional)

Of course, if you add in a lot of people, something like this could take up almost an entire day.

Keep it simple(r).

1) Single blue
2) Blue weapon and shield
3) Red weapon (with or without shield; most use a buckler)
4) Spear (with or without shield; most red weapon users use a buckler)
5) Two weapon (and I don't mean a spear or glaive with a dangling fromt wrist weapon or some other back-up weapon).
6) (Pure) Archer
7) "Heavy" archer (above but with back-up weapon and melee combat factored in)
8 ) grappling ability
9) "Other" (things like dagger fighting, just using javelins or rocks, etc).

All of these can then be "scored" on single combat, small scale combat (say up to 10 fighters total), medium scale (10-50 fighters total), large scale (50-100 fighters total), and grand melee scale (100+ fighters total).

It depends how it is fielded..if it is fielded with fighters of all abilities..I would say stones only.

Why? Because I have seen a few vets come to local practices and just walk around with a stone or two and block with it..throw it when they want..and basically if they felt like it..looted off the dead.

I like Xiao's formula for battle feild awaeness, but you'd need judges on the sideline scoreing and holding up signs, like the olympics. THat would be cool.
You could judge leadership the same way rate people on, say:
Voice/command projection(does he get his point across to his people effectivly?)
Control of his force(do the mo-fo's do what he says?)
effectivness(does his **** work?)
Versatility(can he still pull it together when his plan goes to hell?)
And what I think is very important,
Personal Style(does he look cool doing it?)
Personally, I like to keep myself well versed with all the weapons I have available(witch is about all of them). Every time I start getting too good at practice I switch to somthing I haven't done for a while. It make the new kids feel good when they kill me and I usually learn something new, eventually.

I wasn't sure if this was implied, but I'd assume that each style would have to be matched against various styles, not just it's own? IE, it's important for florentine/spearman to know how to get past a shield, etc.

Also, perhaps a shieldblocking challenge of sorts. Maybe something like:

sword and board vs. sword and board with an archer aiming at each fighter and taking shots at them?

One thing i've never heard mentioned in versatility discusions is shield type. Each different shield requires a different style. Do you know different styles or do you lean on one shield?

I think at Melcaorme this year I'll throw in some tourneys divided by shield types. Round shield tourney, teardrop, whatever.
