Winter War 2006: Feburary 23-26

Postby Lord Talon » Mon Nov 14, 2005 8:13 pm

Dreaming of summer battles? The sun warming your face while you sweat profusely into your garb? Are you tired of layering your clothes and trudging through snow at battle? Do you even have enough garb to layer your clothes?

Well, The Southern Marches have the answer!

Winter War 2006

Waivers: Adult and minor waivers (MUST be notarized) can be obtained HERE.

Where: Rood Creek Park

When: Thursday Feb 23, 2006 through Sunday February 26, 2006

Site: PRIMITIVE!! Outhouses only, no running water, showers, or electricity. The nearest bathhouse, water, and electricity is 2 miles north to Florence State Marina. There are fire pits and tables at each campsite, but they are not movable. You may NOT dig your own firepit.

Weather: Average high 63, average low 42.

Age: 16 to fight, any age to attend. Persons under 18 MUST have an attending chaperone over the age of 21...NO EXCEPTIONS!!.

Waivers: All waivers MUST be notarized regardless of age and be accompanied by a government issued ID (ie driver's license) upon sign in at troll. (This is a federally owned site.)

Check in: Begins at 3:00pm Thursday. Pay, show your ID and notarized waiver, have troll escort you through the site to set up camp, then let the troll know where you are camped. (This is for security purposes.)

Check out: From 10:00am to 1:00pm Sunday. All persons must have their camping area clean and inspected by event staff before leaving.

Troll:
Thursday 3:00pm-7:00pm
Friday 9:00 am -7:00 pm
Saturday 9:00am-7:00pm
If you come before 3:00 pm Thursday you will not be allowed in the campgrounds. If you come at a time when troll is not open, there will be instructions at the gate as to where and when the troll can be reached.

Vehicles: Vehicles may be parked in the available parking spaces next to the camp sites or in the Main parking area about 150 yards from the camping area. Driving within the camp area is allowed only from 7:00 am-12:00pm and 5:00pm-7:00pm unless accompanied by a troll for camp set up or emergency. There is absolutely NO driving through the camping area after dark without permission from troll. If you need to go into town plan ahead and/or park in the main parking area. The camp area is directly across the road from the fighting area and we do not want to dodge vehicles going to and from battles.

Nearby Facilities:
Florence State Marina--about 2 miles from the park entrance. $2/car fee to enter. Showers, laundry, and water available.
City of Eufuala--About 10-15 minutes from the park. Population aproximately 30,000. Stores (such as Walmart, Kmart, and grocery) and restaurants (from fast food to dine in) available.
Gas station/mini mart--about 5-10 minutes from the park. Typical selection of gas station food in a small station.

Rules: The standard Belegarth Book of War rules will be used for this event.

No Pets: There are no pets allowed on the site or around it, so leave them home please.

Keeping the site clean: All persons must tell troll where they are camping so that the area can be inspected for trash prior to leaving.

Noise: Though there are no set noise restrictions, we would appreciate it if the noise level was lowered to a dull roar after 1:00 am.

Yes! You can totally fish right on site. If you look in the background of our WW pics from last year you can see the water. Word on the street is that there are gators there too. =)

Hey Everyone

First time at a Belegarth event, and I am looking forward to getting down there.

My brother, sister, myself, and possibly another friend are going to be driving down from Raleigh NC. The problem is that the directions (at least the ones I have been looking at) are pretty bad. Could one of you guys give me a excact location so I am g-map it? Thanks!

The Winter War site has no exact adress to g-map because the site is controlled by the Army Corps of Engineers and all paperwork about the site goes through a separate adress. This is the copy of instructions from Dothan detailing the last bit of driving to get to Rood Creek Park. I hope they can augment the ones you have been able to find. Were I you, I'd gmap the way to Eufaula then get on 82 and follow these directions. There will be signs at the end of your trip; both the state "park this way" signs, and Winter War signs, which will essentially be big Ws with arrows at the bottom on the side of the road.

--once in Eufaula Alabama, look for state route 82 east in
the old downtown section of town
--trun on sr82 and go into Georgia for 3.3 miles over the
bridge and around some slow curves to sr39 by the gas stations
-- turn left (north) onto sr39,(be careful because sr39 turns off to
the left after 1 mile onto what looks like a new road)
--after this wierd turn off, keep going north on sr39 for 12.1 miles
to Rood Creek park. Entrance is a dirt road on the left that turns
back at quite an angle.
-- Follow the dirt road back 1.3 miles (do not turn off onto any of
the side roads) until you see the pavement start.
--Look left and you should see a sign directing you to Troll near
where the pavement starts!

Hope this helped!

Troll will be open the following times.

Thursday 3:00pm-12:00pm
Friday 8:00am-Midnight
Saturday 8:00am ? Midnight

Only Troll will have the key to the gates, so if Troll is closed you will be unable to drive off site. There is a parking area outside of Troll where vehicles can be parked for total access, but there is a small permit fee ($2-$5) required by the site managers. The camp areas are accessible from the outer parking area, though it is about 200 yards to the closest camping site. If you arrive while Troll is closed, you are welcome to set up camp and go back to Troll at a later time. NOBODY will be allowed on site prior to 3:00pm Thursday, and everyone must be out by 1:00 pm Sunday.

Weapon Check will be from 10:00 am ? 11:00 am Friday and Saturday. Heralds will check weapons for late arrivals to the event if necessary.

Battles will start at 10:00 am Friday and Saturday and run until dusk, approximately 6:00pm.

Feast will be at dark on Saturday night, approximately 7:00 pm.

All event times are EASTERN. This is important since the event is in GA, though the nearest towns are in AL which is CENTRAL time. Sunrise is about 5:30 am, sunset about 6:30 pm. Average temperatures for the event are a high of 64 and a low of 40, records are a high of 85 and a low of 20. Be prepared for cold nights. Forecasts will be updated when available.

Event specific information will be given out at Troll.

Noise restrictions will be loosely enforced from midnight ? 8:00 am. If it is loud enough that the neighboring campers complain, it is too loud.

This campsite is PRIMITIVE. There is no electricity or running water (unless you count the dirty river). There are very nice pit toilets/outhouses which are nicer than any port-o-john. There are about 20 fire rings and stone tables at the camp sites with room at each site for at least 3 large tents. There are also charcoal grill set ups at the sites. Each fire ring has a grate which flips over to cook on. Should every camp site become filled, there is plenty of non-developed space to camp in. There is plenty of dead wood available for fires, and if the rangers are tree farming this year it may even be cut and stacked.

Rood Creek park is on GA hwy 39 about 13 miles north of Georgetown GA, which is just across the AL/GA border from Eufaula AL. Rood creek is 2 miles south of Florence State Marina on hwy 39. *** Here is a web site which has a small map which may help you find connecting roads. Rood Creek is #26.

www.hcc-al-ga.org/tour_public.cfm?Type=2 ***

Waivers can be found here:
www.thesouthernmarches.com/index.cfm?pa ... ar2004.cfm

Click on the link in the waivers section. Please get these notarized, though we will try to have a notary and waivers on site.

Feast will be held Saturday night, Southern Marches style. This means that there will be food, but it may not be what is normal for a medieval feast. In the past we have done kabobs, pizza, wings, and burritos. Troll will ask if you are planning on staying for food Saturday since last year we had too much waste.

Showers ? The nearby Florence State Marina management has changed its mind every year on showers and such. It is possible that they will once again NOT allow us to use there showers even for a fee.

The website for Winter War is a bit out of date through no fault of either the people running the website, the current realm leader, or those who suddenly found themselves in the position of running the event. Where different, the information in this post takes precedence. Information will be posted at the event for further updates.

Turnout for this event has grown every year. If the growth continues as it has in the past this year should have between 75-100 people. Last year we had about 70 people.

Forecast as of 2/16/2006: Thursday rain 30% high 69 low 45, Friday rain 60% high 63 low 45, Saturday rain 60% high 69 low 41.

I have to ask... What if it does rain....Please say we will fight anyways :D It would stick to have to sit around a tent in the rain.

Then again, I guess you wouldn't wanna ruin the weapons/garb either. What do you usually do in the case of rain?

Florence state marina, I have no idea where florence GA is. (Doesn't mean it won't help just that I don't know where it is.) Better to mapquest Georgetown GA or Eufaula AL.

From Eufaula AL take 82 into Georgetown GA (Dont blink or you may miss Georgetown) turn North (left) onto 39. After about a mile 39 will turn off to the left. Go about 12 more miles and look left for the Rood Creek entrance. There will be a Rood Creek Park sign as well as a "WW" sign. (Here's the part I LOVE) Turn off the PAVED 39 and onto the DIRT road, follow back about 1.5 miles. Don't take any of the turn offs, keep going straight. When you hit the pavement again, go straight to the 2nd gate on the left. It is near the boat dock and there will be a sign for Troll.

If at any point you get lost in the close area, ask for directions to Florence State Marina. It is 2 miles north of Rood Creek on 39.

Weather forcast looks to be -

Thur 44 low 69 high 30% rain
Fri 47 low 67 high 10% rain
Sat 43 low 57 high 60% rain

The way we'll be coming from FL is taking 39c to 39 then going south on 39... Hope that's just as good, cause that's the game plan for the two Floridians:)

Anyway we leave in 6 hours, should only take us 7 hours total to get there, we're giving ourselves 9 just because I was on "the perc" after having a 2 inch cyst removed during my navigational training in Marine motor t school:) so thats 2 hours in case "**** happens." Get lost easy and my passenger will sleep through a hurricane. Look for a red 06 impala! Freyson I got ur number in case **** does happen...

Look forward to seeing you all there!

BTW: will there be visible WW signs from the 39?

Thanks to all those that came out to battle with us on Friday. We had some real nasty scrums out there! I was glad to meet all of you guys and hope to see ya at other events, and let me say that it's really unfortunate that we got all that rain, cause I was really looking forward to fighting today.

Oh well...maybe next time.

Hey guys. I just wanted to thank everyone for setting up/coming to WW 06. Yea, the rain stank, but we got some awesome fighting in before that. It was a great first time event, and I got to kick some butt, as well and get mine kicked. It was worth it!

Wish me luck with getting a Realm rolling here in NC. Maybe one day we will be having a little event right here in Raleigh...

Ty again, I'll cya in may!
