It's the same weekend as Beltaine I think, so May 1st. And somewhere in Grinnell. Couldn't tell you much beyond that.

The thing is...that post fits just about every negative thing I've ever heard about Chamonicks.

If I hadn't met a few of the folks from there, I'd be more hesitant about going to the event.

I also think there might be a difference between Chamonix now and then. When I was there, we had Flounder, Kazi, Ziggy, Yaktoo (also NB), Vulture, Beanpole, myself and others. Kazi, I feel, is one of the best Bel fighters ever (also an NB fighter), in terms of skill, honor, friendliness, ect. I feel that way about most of those guys we fought with. I think that once weight mins passed, we were less insular then we had been, and were more open to interact with other Bel realms. It is my understanding that now Chamonix is more insular again, is that the current perception? Anyway, it was these guys who inspired me to have a Bel realm of my own, rather than an insular group, and I have been promoting Bel in my region heavily now for 3 years.

Nothing against you at all, Anastasia. I completely respect the work that you've done out west to build new realms and get more people into fighting.

The general word that I've heard is that folks around Chamonix have become more closed down and that the group fights differently from everyone around (in a bad-different kind of way) and take things with a bit too much levity. That's not particularly bad in any way. I've heard other things, but nothing I can remember right off of the top of my head. The biggest thing has been that I've always heard Chamonix (most of the time pronounced Chamonicks) talked about with half an ounce of disdain.

I met a few of 'em last Halloween and know that they're good folks, though. Nothing to hold against 'em at all, and I'm looking forward to meeting a few more of them and pounding on 'em for a while.

Wait... Cham-o-nicks, with a hard K, right? I assume that is a derogatory thing you guys made up. *. It is French, pronounced Cha-mon-ee. The people of this realm are called Cha-mon-is-ta(s). Whatever, I forgive... I assume that they did something big to earn that, right? Better not hear that with regard to my name, "might" get a spoon in your eye.

Levity has always been a part of Chamonix, we are supposed to be the more silly, less serious side of a Bel/Dag, because that's what works for us on our small campus. At the same time, we were able to go to Bel/dag events and still hold our own. I don't approve of the closing off of our borders to other groups or to the townspeople, which I heard had happened. I think my home realm was more open and more competitive when I was there. Of course the kiddies can do whatever they want with it now, but still, I really hope for new people to come in and open it up. Maybe we can all hope. I think that because they are the oldest active Iowa realm, correct me if I am wrong, it would be nice if they continued to have contact with Bel/Dag. I now really appreciate some of the things Kazi fought for when we were at school together.

Chamonix with a hard ch and a hard k isn't so much derogatory as it is just someone who mispronounced the name originally and it kind of stuck around.

Big Jimmy maybe?

Also, it's way cooler to say 'chom-onicks' than 'chamonix'.

Good lord, we've downgraded from seeking event info to throwing oil on fires! Yay!

That being said, this info is from facebook:

Grinnell Campus (Loose lounge/ Mac Field/ see details
Friday April 30 at 12:00 am until
Sunday, May 2 at 11:00 pm

The actual fighting day is May 1st. And Ana, it should be obvious from the fact that I posted more info than anyone from Chamonix that they've become hermits again. ?:( We need to fix that...

I do totally agree with that, but I am in California now, so good luck to any Iowans who want to take on that challenge. I do very much hope that it will open up as a group, that was really an important part of the Chamonix I knew....we were supposed to welcome everyone, any playing style, and just have fun hitting people. Sorry I won't be there, all my love to alums returning home!!!

I wanna say I first heard that from Zenith or Dameon, and this is WAY back, like when Yaktoo and Shiv were in IL (and for that matter, were Yaktoo and Shiv.) So like.... 2005? I mean it's certainly not new.
