War of Reckoning - February 18-20, 2011 - St. George, UT

Postby Isk » Fri Oct 29, 2010 2:11 am

The time for WoR is coming. After much discussion and in order to respect Battle for the Ring (Jan 8 ), Highlands of Chaos Opener (March 5) and Thaw Brawl (~April 9 or 16) WoR will be held on the third weekend in February (18-20). Remember to get any Valentine's romancing you are responsible for all finished up the preceding weekend so you can add your blood to the red sand.

We will hold it in the same location as last year, which worked out awesome. **Update** The BLM told me they need to force more permits this year and wanted us to spend about 4x as much as last year on the location. We looked all over the place and, thanks to Tiberius, instead found an AWESOME area on private land. Access will be easier and if there is rain in this location it will not be a problem for us. To get there, take exit 8 off of I-15 in Arizona and follow the map. There will be a sign at the turn off of 91.
**Final Update - Really** The site in Littlefield got shut out due to bad relations with Paintball folks. We have been lucky again and managed to score a new location that should work out well. Not as nice as the Littlefield spot, which we will try to get next year, but still good. The ground is dirt, not too hard-packed, but not grass or sand so plan your garb accordingly. It's a little like the ground in the main fighting area when Yestare/Samhain were at the ren fair location. There will be water to one side and softer dirt and grass around the water. In this area there are also trees and cow patties, so fight close to the water at your own risk. Some of you may manage to fall or push each other into the water; bringing a change of clothes would probably be wise. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... 4&t=h&z=13

The site is on unimproved land. There will be port-a-johns, but you'll need to bring your own water (although we are only 10 minutes from Walmart) and firewood. All fires will need to be in a pit or fire ring. Rain gear is a good idea as the forecast predicts rain Saturday.

Friday
Pickup Battles all day, some Thermopilae and CTF depending on numbers. Loptr is bringing down light trees for night fighting.

Saturday
8am - Troll opens
10am - The annual 4 Horseman tourney starts at 10am sharp with apocalypse themed awards going to the winners. Plan your units and register who you'll be fighting with at troll. We are starting at 10am to get the tourney done and so that we can let the winners parade their belt flags around the rest of the day. The tourney will be best out of three for each match-up, single elimination. We hope to be running two match-ups simultaneously and keep them moving.

The Rest of the Day - We will do some unit or realm battles, but mostly CTF, two lines and Thermopilae to take advantage of the castles. The castles must not be climbed from the front.

The unit with the best looking garb will also be awarded a streamer for their flag or tent and will get first in line at feast. This will be awarded immediately prior to feast.

One of our folks works with the local police and the general area we are in sees a lot of marginally legal weekend parties and therefore some police scrutiny. We are there legitimately so if any cops stop by send them to Isk or Link. Since cops may stop by, anything you don't want them getting curious about should stay zipped in your tent.

The event will be $15 so bring your camping gear and your violence and we will prepare the field and the feast (smoked, BBQ chicken, dutch oven potatoes) Saturday night.

We will be enforcing the new javelin weight maximums.
Minor Waivers must be notarized or signed by the parent at the event. Waivers can be downloaded here.
So come on out, Loptr would:

There has been discussion both ways on the castle. It's still up in the air so we'll see.

For the rain, Fork still hasn't hooked me up with his demon contacts; surely you forsaken guys know someone who can keep the rain away? We looked at the numbers and the odds of rain are pretty much the same from January until April, so we stuck with February. If it rains we'll just party on through it and make sure vehicles without 4 wheel are parked the other side of the hill.

No worries, Kage. Most of the problem came because we moved the site which shouldn't happen this year.

I am definitely willing to come, only thing I need to work out is school work and a ride. School work I can do, but I'll talk around for a ride. :D This is going to be my first event where I don't need to get the waiver notarized.

Can't wait to see you guys again!

Awesome Taco! The campfire time Friday was pretty good last year and this year we'll be able to fight as well.

Kraesh, as long as you keep showering it sounds like there'll be enough folks coming down for you to find a ride. Plus, if it rains you can just roll around on the ground to dye yourself red!

You know, there's a business that sells real red dirt shirts. In fact, my mother-in-law bought me one when I first came out here when I was dating my wife-to-be.

It was interesting to say the least, but the dirt came off of it on all the furniture I sat on or on any other clothing that I had on. Maybe we should get one as a gag for "worst garb" or whoever travels the farthest.

It'd be great to have you down Valas and Quorren. We're doing everything we can about the weather, but snow in the passes will be the trickiest part of the trip. Still, if you can make the trip during the day it should be a good time for all. If the passes look snowed in, though, please don't be driving late at night anyone. We don't want to lose any fighters on the way to the event.

I think this event, this realm and this location is awesome for a central So West hub event to pull everyone in the west together in the WINTER!
It's right in the middle of the region and this is the only time of year it isn't hot as the Devil's *.
I'm going to be there with as many people as I can con/scare/threaten into coming.
I belive we could have a ton of people if everyone from around the So West from Cali to Texas tried to get off their asses and show up. This could become a big deal.
See you * there.

Alrighty, I just pinned down the food. Should be smoked BBQ chicken served hot at 6:30pm. It would be awesome if people RSVPed so we'd know just how much to prepare. Right now I'm planning food for 70, but we can go up from there if we need to.

I'm just waiting for verification on my time off request at work. If I get friday off I'll be there in the morning, if not really late friday night.

I'll be vending Shield Blanks, Modular Arrow tips, and sword scabbards. Possibly some random other stuff as well. If you'd like anything specific or a Shield blank that's of a different size/shape then a 30 inch round let me know ahead of time and Save the cost of shipping.

Fitz, can you bring some non-modular arrow kits as well? I have a talked to a few people who may like to build their own on your bases.

Due to increased fee and insurance requirements from the BLM, UT State Parks, and UT Trust Lands, War of Reckoning's location has been moved to an even better new area just 30 minutes down the freeway from St. George. You will attend. You will love it.

Our new location will be in an awesome sandy area, interspersed with light vegetation. The landowner uses it to host paintball events and it is most excellent for foam combat. There is plenty of cover and concealment, great avenues of approach, possible use of structures depending on safety, and a large wide open plain in which to fight, not to mention a gorgeous view of the mountains and river. We're extremely excited over this new site and know that this event is going to be kick * with the attendance and several Bel-/Dag-/Amt-friendly vendors we're expecting to come along. It is just 30 minutes south of St. George, 1.5 hours north of Las Vegas and 10 minutes north of Mesquite, NV which has casinos, hotels, Walmart, restaurants, at least one grocery store, and more than enough liquor stores.

Amenities on site will include port-a-johns and wood for the main fire. You will need to bring your own fire wood as well as drinking/bathing/washing water as the Virgin River is "highly saline at 1,500 to 3,500 milligrams per liter (mg/l), exceeding the State (Nevada) drinking-water standard of 1,000 mg/l." It's a good thing we've got that Walmart just down the freeway.

This map shows how to get to the parking area at the location from the freeway.

Written Directions: (There will be Loptr approved signage)
  • Take I-15 until exit 8 (Littlefield) in Arizona
  • Head south/west on Old Highway 91
  • Stay to the right/north (the upper road) of the fork that drops down into the hamlet of Littlefield, AZ.
  • Continue on this empty and desolate access road westbound for 1.5 miles, passing a church on your left. Turn left at the first marked street on your left which may be marked "Old Highway 91" but is definitely marked "PRIVATE PROPERTY NO TRESPASSING".
  • Follow this road south down the hill towards the river. You'll pass through a gate or two and continue WSW across the gravel area towards the marked Belegarth parking/camping area.

For those of you coming from the north, be careful driving through the Virgin River Gorge. It is a 4 lane divided interstate, (2 in each direction, separated by both barrier and elevation / chasms). Speed limit is 55 MPH, but usually can be traveled at freeway speeds, however it is twisty-turny and not lit. There is heavy semi traffic and occasionally the Arizona DPS patrol it.

Also, Utahns may be particularly interested (though perhaps not), since this is in Arizona, Utah's age restriction of 19 for tobacco use will not be enforcaeable and will fall back in line with the rest of the nation at 18. Also, alcohol percentage and allotted sales times/locations will also not be restricted as in Utah. If you need some booze, Mesquite is just down the road and has plenty of places.

Along that line of thought (and without trying to sound preachy), this is our first time using this venue and while we have an amenable relationship with the landowner and our conversations lead us to believe that he wants us to hold this event on his property every year, we as both the host Realm of An Tir Dearg and all participants as Belegrim in general will need to make sure that we continue our fine tradition of responsibly taking care of our event site. There is one house on a 200' cliff about a 1/4 mile away from our camping area that we have been asked to keep in mind when it comes to noise. The area is completely flat and unobstructed to the house so sound will travel, but our typical camping night life shouldn't be a problem. Just use common sense.

We're really looking forward to having you all come down and have a great time. With your help we'll be able to make War of Reckoning the CW of the winter.

See you in Feb!

Isk, I'll try. I have pending quotes that may soak up all my stock before the event (like 6 dozen worth if everyone actually orders). Just depends on timing and how much $$ I have to purchase new foam (I have a minimum purchase amount unless I want to wait for them to be running it for someone else).

Looking forward to this!

We're really looking forward to having you all, especially those who haven't come before. Breeder, we'll be looking forward to popping some more Amt cherries.

Also, Isk has updated the first post with the pertinent info

Shouldnt be too much of a problem, Moonstone and I are still looking to make it.

Ah, but now you'll get to drive through the scenic Arizona strip. And it is should be even warmer. :D

We didn't want to move it, but honestly the new location offers some great fun that the last didn't with no off-roaders around. And it is a little lower altitude, should be even warmer. :)

With all of the debate about garb, ATD would like to positively encourage good garb at WoR. Our realm feels that if having good garb is really about making the sport look good, the most visual impact comes from units with a cohesive look. In our collective experience, well-garbed groups of fighters who look like they belong together do more to make the field look good than a hodge podge collection of random, unrelated, but well-garbed individuals.

To this end we will be providing an award to the unit whose members are sporting the best looking garb. These fighters will receive an appropriately embroidered streamer flag to tie onto their banner or tent and they will be given first in line at feast. Make the field look good by making your unit look good!

In the case that nobody else from my unit can make it, can I win that award on my own? :P

Also, What is the earliest time on the 18th I could arrive?

Darth, if your unit presence manages to out-pimp all the other units with just your shining self, you will win the award. We are planning to have the site open by 10 am on Friday the 18th.

Thanks for the info.

My attendance is at this point still a maybe (I'll have to judge whether or not my schoolwork at that point will allow me to go) but I'm really hoping to make it. That being said, if I do make it, I would love to volunteer my services to the event in any way. Also, if anyone there is bringing portable showers, and wouldn't mind letting me use them, that'd be great, and I'd be more than willing to contribute money, equipment, grunt work, etc. for your generosity. I can do the camping thing, but I just can't do the no-showering thing. I'm too hairy for that :P

The reasons why I should:
-He needs to get a reality check
-He needs to get his * whooped

The reasons why I shouldn't:
-5-7hour drive with him alone...twice
-He's 15 and probably has no money
-I may want to stop in Vegas on the way
-He can't help me drive if I need it
-By the end of the drive, because I'm just so * amiable, he will probably want to join the Sith...and I might have a problem turning him down, as I allow people to join based on their potential, and because of my good nature, I might see some in him

By my count, the reasons not to do so win.

Baby wipes ftw. Kept me good for weeks at a time in Iraq. If you just must have water, buy a couple gallons to last the weekend and spongebath yourself down by the river. They sell pre-soaped cloths where all you'll need to do is get it wet and start cleaning. You'll need to manage your water, but it is very feasible.

Nonsense sasquatch, but more power to you if someone brings a portable shower and lets you use it.

***EDIT*** My mother-in-law can get comp'ed free rooms at one of the casinos there in Mesquite. I'll see if she'll get one for the weekend and we can rotate people through the shower if they just absolutely must have one. It's just 10 minutes down the road.

Stay tuned.

Those hot water on demand shower rigs look pretty nifty. About $150 to $200. I think I saw one listed on Walmart's website.

Mesquite isn't too far away, maybe you can stay at a motel and just drive in for fighting, and stuff. Or maybe they have a truck stop with a paid shower thing.

I'll do the baby wipe thing, or bring my old steel pot and wash outta that, 'old school GI style'. =)

I just got my Time off request approved so I'll be down on friday!

If anyone is interested in a specific Shield Shape, arrow tips/kits, scabbards etc let me know ahead of time so I make sure to have it. In fact Prepay for it to insure that it is there and Save shipping costs!

I was talking to Breeder tonight at Fighter Practice (yeah us amt tappy tappy types fight twice a week in the winter still) and he was mentioning that if anyone is prepaying for Shield blanks to be delivered at WoR that he should let them know they could comission Shield covers from him to match. This way you'd just need a belt and we could strap it for you right there and you'd be fighting with it at the event. So let us know. I'm sure he'll be along to give some prices.

Depending on how many other projects I have I may be able to take a couple shield cover commissions as well, but go through him first until he is all booked up.

Depending on what you want and how fancy you get, usually ill do a base shield cover with no frills( IE completely Blank) for 25$, a Simple Design ( Like Fork Beard's Chompy) 10$ more and it goes up from there, it's really on a case by case basis. if anyone is interested let me know.

You fine folks from Cali will be passing through Vegas, though by reaching that point you'll only be 1.5 hours from the event; you may be able to meet up with the Dag realm of Barad'dun and carpool with them if they have room and your schedules are sympathetic.

They're great folks and fighters. If it's something you'd think of checking out swing by their website in that link and see if you can work something out.

Awesome, Karion. Bear, Darth, Purp, this is going to be fun. We've got confirmation from some of the Phoenix folks as well.

It appears we will be building the castles again. This time we will just build the gate towers. We're also adding some foam protection to the corners. The 'walls' will be staked at the other end rather than having the second set of towers. Right now, the thing I am the most concerned about is whether we'll have enough tokens (100 seemed like enough at the time) and how well we will be able to keep people on the field while they can smell the chicken smoking back at camp.

Isk,

I am happy to bring the SQD ditch lights, I forgot we had that conversation. They draw a total of 2000 watts and I dont have a power source.

Stoked to get back down south and see some friends.
