Battle for the Ring IV MLK Jan 13-16th 2012

Postby Sir Anastasia » Mon Sep 05, 2011 4:58 pm

We are pleased to announce Battle for the Ring IV, a national Belegarth fighting event over MLK weekend (January 13th-16th) in Chino, California. Battle for the Ring IV is a four-day camping event, with 3 days of official fighting. Last year BfR was a one-day event which drew over 250 fighters and guests; this year, we expect hundreds of fighters from across the country.

In addition to providing an excellent and intense fighting experience, Battle for the Ring is focused on growing the sport by introducing new and cross-sport fighters to the national Belegarth community.

For more information, check out our Facebook Event page at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=162807510465080

Registration: Registration costs $30 at the door, or $20 through pre-registration. To Pre-Reg, send $20 through Paypal to BftRIV@gmail.com, or mail a check to Anduril C/O "Ana Nagel" at 521 South Lyon St. Unit #22, Santa Ana, CA, 92701. Please make the checks out to "Ana Nagel." Make sure to include your real and fighting name so we can add you to the list, and print out and bring along a copy of your Paypal confirmation email. These fees go to pay for the site, insurance, feast, prizes, and etc.

Fighting: Official heralded fighting Friday afternoon, all day Saturday, all day Sunday. Unofficial fighting Friday morning and Monday all day. We will feature massive field battles, theme battles, tournaments with prizes, and etc.

Camping: Camps sites open at 1:30pm on Friday, January 13th and close at 1:30pm on Monday, January 16th. A limited number of spaces are available Thursday and Monday night for those who need to come early/stay late, contact Anastasia at BftRIV@gmail.com for arrangements.

Facilities: This site features indoor toilets, working showers, and a washer/dryer for clothes ( shower and washer/dryer require quarters, available at check-in desk).

Game Nights: BFR IV will feature a nightly Dragon's Inn, an indoor Game Room featuring board games, collectible card games (especially MTG), tabletop RPGs, and the like. If you have any decks, boardgames, or one-shots you'd like to run, bring them along. Contact Brian if you have any questions.

Feast: There will be a feast, a potluck, and a pancake breakfast provided. Details to come. Each will be held on different days.

Mission Statement: The sport of Medieval fighting has gained a great deal of national recognition in recent years, yet we continue to divide ourselves into small, secluded secluded groups, keeping us from presenting a united face to the world at large. We believe that our sport is larger than we think; and although some of us prefer heavier or lighter combat, more or less roleplaying, and so forth, we believe there is more that unites us than divides us.

The primary goal of Battle for the Ring is to provide an intense and excellent fighting and social experience to our experienced and returning fighters. At the same time, we hope to use Battle for the Ring to introduce new fighters who have never been to a national event, as well as cross-sport fighters who are interested in our method of play, to the national Belegarth community. We are dedicated to creating an enjoyable and educational experience for new fighters, fostering unity and good relations across sports, and ultimately creating a friendly, mutually supportive community through which the sport of Medieval Combat can grow in strength, popularity, and fame.

I have a few friends I'd like to see and I might be able to make this coincide with a visit.

Do I get anything special since I'm coming from NYC?

Hell, I'd suggest Troll gets waived if you literally crossed the country.

At any rate, I'm going to put a lot of effort into making it out to BftR this year. Our realms are close enough that we should be more neighborly than we are. Cheeseheart et al came out to WoR II and the favor needs to be returned. I'll see how many of my guys I can scrounge up, but it will probably be a modest showing.

I applaud your efforts to unite rather than divide, regardless of the flak you get for it. What rules will be used?

Full Belegarth BoW. Garb included. If the BoW makes any changes between now and then, we may waive those requirements so that people don't have to rush to alter their gear, much like we did with javelin weight at last year's event.

Looks like this is close to Ventura, Sword Coast territory. I'll see if I can hook you up. Also, feel free to check out this carpool listing:

I think if you follow the directions you can list that you need a ride. Hope that helps!

Well over the confirmations and maybes from last year, looks like we might beat our old record.

On that note, please RSVP Yes, Maybe or No ASAP so we can be sure to plan for what appears to be shaping up to be a VERY large event. So far we have a lot more RSVPs than what we had last year, and we want to make sure everyone has an epic time (with enough food!)

Just as a reminder Pre-registration closes January 1st 2012, so please get those in as well.

It is my pleasure to announce to all attendees of the fourth annual Battle for the Ring the first annual BelBowl, an 8 to 10-man single-elimination tournament played with the rules of the game Aztec Football. The BelBowl is set to commence on Sunday, January 15 at 1pm on the main fighting field. For those who may not be familiar with the rules of Aztec Football, they are as follows (with slight modification for better gameplay):

• A point is scored when the team on Offense successfully transports a designated member of their team (a.k.a “the ball”) across a goal line (player must be alive)
• The team on Offense loses the match if their designated “ball” is killed
• The player designated as the “ball” is immune to any damage done by a projectile
• A team cannot score a point while on Defense
• The team which is on Defense begins the match on the goal line. The team which is on Offense will begin outside of it
• Each team will have three opportunities to score a point
• At the end of both teams’ three attempts, the team with the most points is the victor. In the event of a tie, the tie will be settled by a standard field battle between the two teams
• The matches will take placed in an enclosed space. Crossing these boundaries will result in death.
• Archery will not be permitted. Use of other projectiles is allowed.
• Armor will be counted
• Teams must have a minimum of 8 members and a maximum of 10. In the event that the competing teams are uneven, the team with the greater number of members will be asked to sit out members to make the teams equal. Teams may switch out players in between matches. This is to encourage smaller and younger groups to participate.
• Each team will designate a figurehead captain who will be ceremonially beheaded in the event of defeat

In order to ensure simplicity in running the tournament, the number of teams which may participate is limited to either 8 or 16. This being the case, registering for the tournament will be on a first come, first serve basis. Teams that register later will be put on standby for participation. Teams (and a team name) must be registered with no fewer than 6 people by Saturday, January 14 by 6pm, and must have a minimum of 8 members by 12pm on January 15. If a team fails to have a minimum of 8 members by that time, they will be replaced by the first team on standby which has the minimum amount of members required to play. Teams are encouraged to register with their realms and units, but will not be forced to do so. Should you wish to register your team at ANY time before these dates, please send me a PM with your team name and the names of no fewer than six members. And yes, there will be awesome prizes for the winners…and heralds in zebra-print tabards.

Sounds like an awesome game.

I'm unfortunately going to have to cancel my attendance. We just got hit with a pretty expensive furnace repair and associated gas bill so funds are re-allocated to real life.

Looking forward to seeing some awesome pics and hearing good stories.

Several cool vendors confirmed including Tandy Leather!

Also, if you intend to arrive early on Thursday. I need you to send an email to bftriv@gmail.com NOW letting me know the number in your party. There is a finite number of "early" spots available. I'm flying in Friday to LAX, and am scheduled to arrive at 3:30pm.

First, a reminder on Rasheab's note below. He needs a ride from the airport. Anyone?

Also - for everyone coming to the event, the weather looks to be good all weekend with daytime highs in the upper 60's. But it will be cold at night - predictions are in the high 30's. So pack lots of warm stuff for the evenings, and plan on layers. If you don't own warm garb, wear thermals, wool socks and the like under your garb. Also, wear a period-appropriate hat. Hats help warm your body by keeping heat in (and are critically important for those like me with a solar panel). If you don't own a heavy cloak, bring a neutral colored or plaid blanket to wrap up in.

I'm flying in for the event, and I'm looking for a ride to the site from the airport. (Hopefully a ride back to the airport as well, but getting to the event is the important thing.)

I'm flying in Friday to LAX, and am scheduled to arrive at 3:30pm.

(I fly out Monday, and I'm trying to be back to LAX by 2pm.)

I tentatively have a ride lined up. I'll edit this post when it's 100% confirmed.

Edit: Ride confirmed. See y'all this weekend. :pirate:

I'd like to give a big hats-off to our hosts for B4R IV. It has been well-worth the 15+ hour drive each winter to come fight in swell weather with swell folks.

Your event ambiance is very welcoming to many walks of foamfighting including a diverse and blissful nightlife balanced between nerding out on games and all the free liquor shoved at us...

Many thanks for making rad custom prizes, sweet event tags (with rings!),and decadently filling feasts. A rise in intensity and integrity of fighting since last year was also noticable, in addition to improvements in wpn check, heralding & staff training. Please continue to host this well-timed and well-coordinated event! You were all exceptionally pro at minimizing what difficulties did arise and ensuring a continuing good time amongst all. Big props to Ana, Brian, Cheesehart, Yuri, Rev, Ember and all who persistently heralded and staffed keeping everything rolling smoothly to support everyone having a good time.

Also, a heads up that as captain of the BlingWraiths I intend to add a trinket to the skull staff and put some custom work into getting the whole aztec-lord outfit together such that it can be worn by team members throughout the event year and passed on to next years' winners. You could keep the staff going like the CW banner if you're so inspired. We'll try to bring the costume back better than we found it :wizzard:

Hands down, one of the best events I have ever been to. Everyone was so nice and the coordinators ran everything extremely well. You guys should be proud of what you have put together and I cant wait till next years event. I was also glad to see that so many out of state people could make it down for the event. Its always great to see the people who have worked so hard just to get to the event itself and having it be well worth their time.

The feast was delicious, again thanks to Cheeseheart's wonderful mother. Thank you Black for providing the entire event with so much tasty boozeahol. The tournaments were very quick and efficient thanks to all the heralds who helped out (both in the tourneys and not in the tourneys)Weapons check ran very smooth, I liked how the fail piles were split up into why each item failed. The awards ceremony was fantastic especially since it started off with a truly epic finish to the Highlander tourney thanks to Bhakdar and Rift's stunning fights. I thought that the gold coins from newbies to vets was a wonderful addition to help recognize those who really help newbies stay in this game and get us to grow.

As far as the fighting field is concerned, could next year be arranged to be on a grass field? I had noticed quite a few injuries as a result of the rocks and stuff but did I enjoyed the size of the field and how it was split up to deal with tourneys and regular fun battles at the same time.

My bow scale disappeared out of weapons check on Sunday. It was the only one there.

Brown/black metal with a gold label.

If this could find its way back to me, I'd appreciate it.

Also, a very high-end set of headphones grew some legs and disappeared out of someone's tent.

It's a hard leather case with the brand on the flap.

If these are found and can make their way back, no questions asked.

It was a rockin event and thanks to all who traveled, helped and swung foam.

And a huge special thanks to those that traveled from afar, are new/new-ish to the sport, and still rocked out on helping with the little things. (Medic call runners were amazing)

Thank you to Lodian who made those awesome "Ring Bearer" belt flags, Staff Sashes, and helped with the tokens for entry. Thank you to Gloria (Cheese's mom) for a wonderful feast. Thanks to everyone who helped staff the event for me. Thanks to the people who kept me company or kept me from dying during the event after I found out my house flooded Sunday and I got food poisoning! AND thanks to all who gave compliments, truly I think event coordinators live for that. I'd try to name you all for what you did, but so many stepped forward I don't think I could list them all. Thank you to medics, heralds, kitchen clean-up, trash crews, security volunteers, troll!, lunch people, and everyone else who made the event work or who made it better for someone else. Know that your contribution has hooked some first timers on Bel and that the community enjoyed the event because of your service and dedication.

Bhakdar already did a good job of summarizing how I feel about this event, but I will reiterate that it was well worth the 20 hour drive for me and I will gladly do it again.

The level of enthusiasm and intensity on the field was unlike anything I'd ever experienced and makes me excited to return and see how things develop next year. Having a dedicated indoor space at night to warm up and socialize was awesome, and the night fighting was a great chance to spar and try out new things with different people. The feast was hella dank, and all the extra food, imbibements, and activities provided throughout the week really helped to make the whole event seem like a community.

Thanks to everyone who helped make BftR4 possible. I had a great time and hope to see you all sooner than later.

I'm a little late to the party, but I have a day off from work so I can post now ;).

I am so glad I came to BftR - you guys throw a rockin' event. Good clean fighting, good food, good booze, and good times all around. I hope to see all my new Cali peeps up at Western Wars of Chaos some time soon.
