Kings Tournament November 4th, 5th, 6th.

Postby Smithy32 » Thu Oct 06, 2011 6:05 pm

Barad'Dun is extending an invitation for our first event: The Kings Tournament.
The date was chosen to remember our founding leader and king who was lost to us on November 8th of last year. We have a link http://kingtourney.weebly.com/ to help explain and inform. It's also being updated on a constant basis as we draw near the date, finalizing the finishing touches.

Please feel free to contact me for additional information.

Hope to see you at the Tourney.

I'll post pictures up of the tokens for the event, one side with have the Barad'Dun tower, and the other will have Surt's king symbol. They will likely be wood burnt.

Starting to get the tokens pumped out day by day. Considering the aawesome amount of pre-registrants (120 so far?), Demie Zephyra's making 200+ of these.

There's 120 pre-reg's already? How many are fighters / non-coms?

And nice tokens.

Knubbs should be posting up everyone who has pre-reg'd shortly on our forums. I'm not sure how many are fighters, but as we get closer (hopefully in the next week) we can get an idea how big this will be as we get ready for the feast.

120 pre-regs, I'd be stoked if even half of them are fighters.

I guess that was a miscommunication between Izzy and Knubbs, their estimated attendance is 120 based on realms who have RSVP'd.

2 weeks away! More details are being added to the site tomorrow by Knubbs.

And what are the facilities like at the site? Is there running water, bathrooms, showers, etc.?? Just want to plan accordingly.

Feasting/Eating Hall
Public Hot Showers
Running Water
Public Restrooms
It's kind of a rec-center all in one between the fighting/camping areas.

Is there a time in the evening that we must arrive by? I think my carpool is leaving from SoCal at ~4:30pm, and it's going to take us 4-5 hours to get there.

I think we have access to the rec center 24/7, the majority of the fighting and games will start Saturday, with pick up games and arrival on Friday. We'll have people out and about late to help if you need.

There is a walmart close by too.

1. I noticed in the google earth pic of the park it is square and covered in grass. Where are we camping? On the grass or are there designated campsites? In other words is it first come first server or can I actually form a camp with my unit?

Our main camping area is 150ft x 275ft (the soccer field). We will be setting up 25x25ft blocks for every 8 people in a unit or realm. I will have the map complete for the site before this saturday and you will be able to pick since you paid already.

2. Are there toilets?

Yes, we have 2 sets of Permanent toilets on site available to us. They are a next to the pool and Baseball field. We also have showers but you might want to wear trunks or your swimming attire to use. Think gym Showers.

3. Are dogs allowed?

Yes, must be on a leash and of course clean up after them.

4. If designated campsites then they must have BBQ grills or firepits and tables, if not, what are the rules concerning fire? Firerings on grass?

They do not have designated campsites but your areas will allow you setup fires and other such stuff. Fire rules are fairly simple you have to have the fire in a firepit, 18" off the ground. If you plan on having a fire you need a Fire Extinguisher within 15'-20' of the fire.

Going to be bright and sunny the weekend of the event, nice 70's, but could get chilly at night so dress accordingly.

UPDATE!

http://kingtourney.weebly.com/

Pre-registration has been extended until thursday! Additional details are now added to the website. Tournament prizes will consist of custom wood burned plaques given out to those in each category. Expect lots of fighting and a great feast menu:

The menu being served at the tourney is. . . . . .

Roast Pig.

Kilirri Lizard Cut served with sweet potatoes and mixed vegetables.
This is actually a chicken breast marinaded in a curacco liqueur with crushed garlic and spiced cloves. It is cooked through and covered with a blue lemon sauce. It's then served beside mashed sweet potatoes and mixed vegetables.

Poached Pears in a Rasberry Sauce
Cored pears that have been cored and cooked, then set to rest in a rasberry sauce.

Spiced and Mulled Wine and warmed and spiced hard Cider for those over the age of 21, and warmed spiced apple juice for those under the age of 21.

Feast is $5.

More details can now be found on the weebly site.

Next year we'll be hosting the event in August or September where it's a bit warmer (to stay away from Sam Hain and get some of you awesome folks out). Event was fun, wet, and I hope those of you who took home one of the wood burned plaques enjoyed the tournaments.

Reverend did some of the best heralding I've seen, we appreciate the help running games. You guys rocked.

Any good, the bad, and the ugly - pros/cons comments are welcomed. We'd like to know where we can improve for next year.

Well first thing, don't host the event in August or September. We already have a lot of stuff going on those months and we don't want to bog it down.

Thanks for a very fun event ladies and gents. I will absolutely attend next year and hopefully be able to drag along more of my Realm.

The Good:
  • Weekend event w/ camping is always a plus for hanging out.
  • Close to Home is awesome!
  • Field was very nice, and large enough for us to fight large battles. Ground was solid and dry.
  • Good honor on the field
  • Bosma shadowing me as a herald and learning/asking good questions.
  • Meeting the other War Wolves of Barad'dun.
  • Meeting Surt's brother - man are they near look-alikes.
  • Meeting Sir Kyrian and Sir Sorcia. I wish he would have been able to teach a class or two.....that knowledge would have been invaluable
  • Seeing some SCA fighting. Never had the experience before.
  • On-site, real bathrooms were clean (cold!) and a must-have
  • Intermittent garbage cans were cool to have access to
  • Weapons check and Troll were near flawless and wonderful to participate in. (This says a lot about an event, actually)
  • Communication appeared to be running smoothly.
  • Tournaments were fun, 99% light hearted, and clean. There should be no complaints about outcomes whatsoever.
  • Tourney prizes were awesome.
  • Tokens were awesome.
  • Hard working kitchen staff
  • Feast. Food was very, very tasty. Blue chicken rocked.
  • On-site kitchen - very cool and unique.
  • Taco grilling up the chicken and shooting the **** with me.
  • Hollister sharing booze.

Room for Improvement:
  • I felt there was too much down time between fights. There should be a written schedule and head herald needs to stick to it like his life depends on it - always pushing, always organizing to the point of being annoying. Always, always, always harping on "let's go! move, let's fight!". What is essentially a single day of fighting needs to be taken advantage of. This wasn't, by far, the slowest of events, but I counted approximately 1 hour lost to mandatory water breaks and simple lulls.
  • Mandatory water breaks. I realize this is a Barad'dun thing, and that it is well-intentioned, but fighters are adults. Let them leave to get water if they want. If they don't want it, that's their deal. No need to play mom/dad and force people to take a break for water. If they get sick or drop dead its their problem. A simple reminder of "drink water if you need it!" yelled every 20 minutes is more than enough. Keep the fighting going going going and people will participate at their desired pace without a babysitter.
  • Lunch ran a bit longer than scheduled.
  • No pre-existing camp fire sites.
  • Make shift main fire
  • Camps were very far apart.
  • Out-post 7......It was a fun game since I was a guardian, but it always turns into human bowling and I hate that because its ridiculously unsafe. One day at some realm that's having a battle like this, there is going to be a snapped leg/knee/ankle/neck and someone might even die. In real combat, this would absolutely be the way masses of men in armor would have had to fight to take a bridge/gate, but in our game it is far too dangerous to be used as a game. The exception, in my mind, is the way it was set up when ATD raided you guys (the version with the giant blue bear). The narrow spiral entrance only allowed a few people to walk up and engage through the doorway without 300 lb men smashing into and trampling crowds of people. I would infinitely prefer to play this version rather than the wrecking ball ones.
  • Feast was a separate fee from Troll.
  • Feast. Food was cold, slow to be served, some people at tables were skipped until servers were notified, and there was no booze/drinks served as promised. I only found out that it actually did exist when I was in the kitchen cleaning. I heard through the grape vine that it might have been intended as its own after-dinner course like an aperitif, which is perfectly fine, but that wasn't communicated in the feast announcement. I assumed it was to be served as a beverage w/ the meal.
  • Flails allowed in the tournaments at all. Total cheese.
  • No stabbing w/ blues and reds in the flo/red tourneys.
  • Not enough dedicated heralds for the tourneys.

The Different/Interesting: (neither good nor bad)
  • No magic switch! >:( :P
  • SCA pageantry at feast. Never seen it before. Kind of comical, but cool also. Glad to have witnessed it. Would have been neat if everyone present were on the same page.

Thank you so much for hosting this event. I enjoyed myself immensely and wish I would have been able to camp out Friday and Saturday nights. In both of our sports, there are no better people that I would rather hang out with and fight with. Hope to see as many of you as possible at Battle for the Ring III in Janurary.

Three cheers for Barad'dun!
